Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

What a HORRIBLE ending for something not coming back on next year!
Yet these hideous reality shows go on and on. Go figure.
Come the heck on! Why do we even bother watching great tv anymore if it’s canceled before it even starts? They def have to reconsider a second season. So frustrating! Bring it back. The ending was def left wide open for a season 2.
They could even bring Matt D back by possibly going back to the past etc. many options and scenarios could be explored and adventured. Bad move Fox!
I would definitely watch a second season. True Detective works with a new cast and storyline
each year, so why not Wayward Pines? i thoroughly enjoyed the show……but I love sci-fi…
and would like to see another story. There are several books are there not?
love this show you cant can it !!!!!
One thing that did n make sense to me is that this is supposed to take place n the future. These are supposedly the only people who survived a catastrophe. How isitthen that w see Dr. Pritchard go back an fort from Wayward Pines to talk to a secret service agent in the past?
Lee–The scenes with Dr. Pritchard in present time were flashbacks. He as obviously speaking with people who had some involvement in the planning of the town.
You must have missed an episode. The good doctor froze himself as well after gathering people. When you see him in the past it’s just a recollection of things that happened to help flesh out the story.
Be strong guys, i think a miracle can still happen,i readed alot of articles these 6 last hours and i’m pretty sure than wayward pines will live again M.Night.shyamalan dont giving up so easly and talks already about a season 2 even if the show has been cancelled! =) i’m sure a season 2 is still possible now and i’ll keep up to support the show. Thank you to be there and defend this show i was thinking i’m was the only one to love the series, you show me that i was wrong. =)
I have read the series and would definitely watch a season 2. Making a huge mistake if FOX doesn’t plan for a “next” season.
Why do the people over at FOX decide to put something as good as this on. ust to take it away. No wonder FOX sits at the Bottom of the other Networks….
Fox keeps canceling shows after one season that are doing well. Looks like i’ll just stop watching fox shows. No sense in getting comitted if they are just going to can everything I watch.
How can you end at season 1 with an ending like that .its wrong fo your viewers so far its doing better than that other garbage that come on around that time slot .I want to c how them other kids took the town over and how will wayward pines will survive…..
sorry but season1 ended as it started i can not season 2 being any different I WILL NOT WATCH SEASON 2 if it dose happen.
I would definitely watch a second season. Really sad that this is the end.
It is so frustrating!!! How can they cancel such a great show. I HATE FOX!!!!
I have no idea why I bothered to leave a comment if you’re just going to delete it for no reason.
