Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Please continue Wayward Pines. This is another show that was worth watching. Matt Dillon made this show enjoyable. They canceled The Following, Revenge and gets replaced with those stupid, ridiculous so called ‘reality shows ‘ which makes me sick. Fox network is losing. I am not watching anymore programs on Fox.
Season 2 please, this show is fantastic!
Regards From the UK!
I hope You send a season two with Wayward Pines. You must. What happens with Ben? Greetings from Norway :))
I am BEYOND sick of networks doing this. I have lost 3 shows this season I started watching because of these networks canceling shows before giving them a decent chance. Sometimes it takes word of mouth and time to start showing rating rewards! It wasn’t the shows fault that it had poor ratings. It was the commercial previews/teasers…THEY WERE HORRIBLE. I almost didn’t watch it myself because they gave me no insight as to what the show was about and just left me flat. I decided to DVR the show just in case and boy am I glad I did,… Read more »
The show died with Ethan Burke. He was the one, truly good character who brought the show to life by restoring common sense in all the mystery. With his death and no other character coming close to taking on his role has the show died as well (unless they suddenly pull out a clone of his somewhere…). Why did the show had to be canceled? My guess is that it was too ambitious and in the end too costly to produce. From the houses in Wayward Pines to the mountain complex interior was everything made to look pristine and new.… Read more »
I loved this show Please don’t make another Firefly type mistake and cancel a great show
I think Wayward Pines was great. Please do not cancel.
Please make a second season of Wayward Pines.
I don’t think it will work without the original cast of characters. It would be like watching a season of Lost without Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hugo. It’s over for me.
Myself and my family really love this show it is really a great show and it doe hold your attention, I’m hoping that the Fox network will rethink the decision to cancel Wayward Pines.
Big mistake to cancel! This is a great show! Hard to wait from week to week to see what would happen next! Would definitely watch another season. Please reconsider!
There has to be a season 2!! You can’t leave us hanging like that. This show is second favorite with walking dead being my first and I think a lot of other people would agree. I know I am really looking forward to season 2, please keep this show going!!
I think all the people who watched season 1 faithfully. do want a season 2. its a great show and keeps you thinking whats next. big mistake if its cancelled
Why did Fox cancel Westward Pines? We love the show. Does Fox enjoy cancelling its best shows? Fox seems to cancel its greatest shows and it seems like Fox tends to keep the shows that few care about. I sometimes feel like Fox is teasing the viewers by cancelling its best shows. *** opinion ***
It’s the second best show on Fox yet they’re cancelling it and keeping all those other lame reality type shows? Money…
I agree, I think reality shows are the worst and are losing their ooomph. They are scripted and boring as well as trashy. I live life I want entertainment and something that ISN’T about people living theirs!
