Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

Bring the series back. FOX is getting as bad as ABC (Already Been Canceled). This is a good series and should be continued.
I can’t believe they cancelled the show ..great writing and this what happen ..fox need to bring it back
renew this series now!!
Please Bring wayward pines back I loved the show . Give it a chance .sick of shows getting axed after 1 season .
I can’t believe Wayward Pines was cancelled. It has so much potential to go in so many different directions, for years, especially with M. Night at the helm. I would love to see what happened to their earlier experiments. and with other teams out there looking for other survivors, there’s even the potential for offshoots. Fox has made so many poor decisions lately, including canceling The Following. We became fans of Fox initially with “24” and have been avid fans of all newly produced shows at least until they turned to the reality shows. There’s nothing we watch on Fox… Read more »
This is crap. I want anouther season. So does the rest of my family.
I am so tired of good shows getting cancelled! The Following, now Wayward Pines! Bring it back. M. Knight can make it work!
Ok, this makes no sense. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has only 3.54 million viewers but is not cancelled and Wayward Pines has more, 3.82 million viewers is cancelled. Makes NO SENSE! Here is one more example, Worlds Funniest Fails renew with on 2.70 million viewers. Isn’t 3.32 million viewers more??? RENEW WAYWARD PINES…THE VIEWERS HAVE SPOKEN!
Yes! I would watch another season!!
Love this series! I really hope there is a second season.
Really? WHY would you cancel such a good series? We just watched the entire rerun of the series and are anxiously awaiting the repeat of the series finale on September 8th. We are very disappointed in Fox for ending this series – especially when we read the viewer numbers. If it is the second rated show of the summer for your network, I repeat what everyone else seems to be saying as well – WHY???? Whoever made this decision should be fired for not listening to the viewers! P.S. We have never written to a network before about a series.… Read more »
I absolutely LOVED this show and looked forward to watching it every week. I am relly disappointed that smart shows like this get cancelled and other mundane shows just seem to go on and on for years! Bring Wayward Pines back!
That is ridiculous it cost too much.. Well, put it on for another season to make your money back. You left us hanging with the teens running the town. Go on from there. Just look at all the fans that want the show.. If FOX is too cheap to keep a good show, sell it to CBS, NBC, ABC, or best yet Syfy. Look what happened to Stargate SG1 on for years on Syfy. or NCIS on
CBS on for years and now has a spin off. Wake up FOX. Fans want Wayward Pines season 2!!
I really enjoyed Wayward Pines. I feel if it was to end now many of us will feel “left hanging”. I really want to know how this story progresses from the season 1 finale.
YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO US!!! WE NEED MORE!!!
What a shame. For goodness sake, just do another season of Wayward Pines. you see you have fans. Keep cancelling, we all can go to something else in place of tv. I have Netflix for OISTNB and found a similar one filmed in England called Wentworth if anyone is an OITNB fan.
