Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
I was all set for season 2 now this news smh sooooo disappointed
I love this show, I am very dissapointed
Excellent show…I will miss it.
FOX would be stupid not to bring this show back! There’s nothing like it on tv right now. I’m not sure about getting a all new cast though….Gotta keep some of the old ones in there. I also watched the previews to Gone, I’m excited for that. Specially if they incorporate some people on both shows. Like Sarah and her baby Lol
What is the 2nd book about? I know there are three of them. Wouldn’t it be good to stick to the premise of the book?
Loved the show would be a shame iif no more made : /
Why the heck was this excellent show cancelled ? I guess it didn’t meet Fox’s expectations in terms of audience or what else ?
This has been a great series and a lot of us are gonna miss it … Too bad 🙁
Please do season two I’m in Australia and was hanging out for every new episode to watch
The first series was awesome. What do you mean there won’t be a second? Why the hell not? So sad!
First tv series I have watched in 20 years thy are fools if they don’t have another10 weeks and for that matter 60 weeks
I want a season 2 but I don’t want it to go back to square one. That would annoy me. I want to see from where they left off. That is what kept my husband and I’s attention.
hell ya bring on Season 2 we want to know what else happens.
the ending in the first season leaves you at whats going to happen in the
second season. you cant just do that people leave them hanging and then
decide not to do the second season.
We the people need a second episode come on fox11,.put good shows on and then cancelled every show that was catchie to the people we need good series not partial this way you will continue to have more viewer to continue to stay focused on fox11 and stay alive in our eyes love it or people are gonna watch something else on cable
I love Wayward Pines! I missed the first two episodes, but was able to watch them online. I got hooked! What a hraat series! Please – Don’t even think about canceling it. It is about survival and about intelligent people teying to make sense of a world that is hostile and alien to them. It presents stories about love, coming of age, about families coming together or falling apart. It examines what it takes to make a community work and how intolerance and distrust can tear it apart. It reveals the threats outside the safe zone. But it also reveals… Read more »
I really enjoyed this show and was hopeful there would be a second season. I understand M. Night Shyamalan wanting to insure it meshed and worked correctly, but I thought the concept of what it was all about was very interesting and exciting. I hope they reconsider. Not much good on tv these days.
