Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
Aw man! You guys really SUCK! That show was great! I was going to give it another chance if season 2 was going to show.. the first one was ok. I didn’t like that fact that you had to kill my favorite character! But now you’re CANCELLING IT?! NOT COOL!!
huge mistake not showing a season 2!! there aren’t that many great tv shows that make you think and are so entertaining!!
This is one of the best shows a long with the Walking Dead! . A lot of people are going to be very upset. Everyone would talk about what they think is going to happen next.
Please reconsider!
Please reconsider your decision of cancelling Wayward Pines. I would definitely watch a second season.
This is not the first show that has been cancelled without any apparent reason from the Networks. It makes no sense since the ratings are good and viewers say that they would watch a second season then why is the show cancelled? The people that make the show say that they would make another season but ultimately its up to the executives and on this show they gave no reasons that make any sense. Other shows with inferior ratings seem to somehow hang on, season after season even though the fan base does not indicate good ratings. My question is… Read more »
i like the show was hoping for season 2
I Love this show – was so hoping for season 2
All the good shows get cancelled 🙁
Love this show! Why do they cancel the good shows and not the bad ones? Please donot cancel Wayward Pines.
Time to boycott Fox and M. Night Shyamalan – there are other creative people out there and clearly better, more innovative , and forward thinking television networks who may think twice about alienating and therefore probably losing av huge fan following.
M. Night Shyamalan has great influence in whether this show gets a chance to see a second season. He needs to fight harder for his fans – M. Night Shyamalan and a Fox must stop doing this to their fans. Peop,e get excited and supportive of a great show just to be let down time and time again while far more inferior shows get renewed. If this show does not return I will not watch a first run M. Night Shyamalan or Fox show until it runs more seasons – then I’ll buy it as a complete series or wait… Read more »
This is ridiculous – the show is great -much more story to get told – if it’s cancelled I say boycott Fox and cancel Hulu which is heavily Fox based
too late for that. Fox has no line up. the simpsons have become atrocious! i haven’t laughed since 8 seasons ago when it was actually funny. now its just dragging and boring. family guy is still funny, but that ‘s about it. it and the upcoming xfiles are the only reason to watch this channel. otherwise, its all reality show nonsense dominating public tv. cable shows on the other hand are thriving in rich quality entertainment. no complaints there.
I would love to see a second season of Wayward Pines. I enjoy the suspense of the show I was glued to my TV and would make sure I recorded every show. Love it and I give it thumbs up 🙂 for a great show. Please come back and please think about it. I will be watching for updates. Thanks for a great show.
Why would they cancel a show like Wayward Pines? After the first episode I became addicted to it and could not wait for the week to pass just so I could watch what happens next. Please make a Season 2 for this TV Show and remove another show with low ratings for it.
Can’t believe this has been cancelled. TV is utter rubbish without tv shows like this. I think you need to rethink making another season but put some more known actors in it to boost the ratings.
Yes, I would watch a second season. It is well written and acted, and the stories have more potential.
This is bull ****…another great show gets canned and why? because there ain’t no two-broke-girls sucking producer **** thats why.
