Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
This was great. I watched this and expected that something was wrong because of the end. Wish I was wrong.
Great show once you suspend reality, Twists and turns. Maybe they should have only moves to the year 3000 or less.

I began watching this show because of Matt. However, not seeing promise in the characters left, I have changed my mind. The son shows potential. I think you all bailed. Too bad.
I really wanted a season 2 .
I am very disappointed that they canceled this show I was truly looking forward of seeing more of it, I loved the show! There was so much excitement with the plot
Yes I to love the show. HATES they killed off Matt Dillion. But over all. It was great. Would watch a second season. But u really gonna have to be creative to fill Matt Zillions shoes….
I would not be surprised to see more of this in the future,
Awesome show they shouldn’t cancel it. Myself and other people I know have been waiting all year for season 2. Very disappointing
That’s too bad. I liked the show, the characters, the plot. I was looking forward to a season 2!!
Great show. Original and intriguing. Can’t believe that it’s scrapped after one series. Bring it back please
Loved the show, this is why I don’t bother watching new series anymore…..every time I like a show, they cancel it. No wonder computers are replacing television.
SOOOO TRUE!!!#
Love the show. Hate to hear its not coming back. I was just searching to see when it was returning and ran across the bad news
One of the best series since Dallas. I have boycotted TV since Dallas went off the air, and returned to watch Wayward Pines and Revolution. Both series were Awesome! Both have been canceled!!
