Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.

I’m not sure what all of you are complaining about. This is a “Mini Series” which means the show ends at the end of the season.
Every ” limited run” series they brought back crashed and burned in the second season. Be grateful!
Enjoyed every element of this show from beginning to the end of each episode, first show In a long time that was worth watching…unbelievable that there is any consideration to not have a second season…
Please continue for a second season. I love this show. I hate when great shows are cancelled and replaced with not so good ones. In my opinion Wayward pines was not advertised enough to get enough viewers to follow the show. If it had been I believe it would have continued. Wayward Pines has an excellent cast and creative plot! PLEASE CONTINUE WAYWARD PINES!
Love this show also…would greatly appreciate a second season
While I have truly enjoyed the show. It was always billed as a 10 episode mini series so this should not be a surprise that it won’t be back. I wouldn’t be surprised if they run another mini series in a couple of years like 24 and X files.
Please continue for a second season. I love this show.
I have to agree with Lorrie about the way Fox cancels shows so fast, like Backstrom & Almost Human- both shows i was hoping would have a second season. It seems Fox doesn’t give some shows a chance to grow , even when they have good casts & writers.
I really liked Wayward Pines, but without Matt Dillon heading the cast I don’t think I would have cared much for a second season. When he blew himself up with the Abbys my first thought was ” They might as well end the show, also….” Anyways, the one season was very well done & I’m glad i was able to enjoy it.
So personally im distrought over this..
i finally found a show i love again and its from fox.. they always cancel their good shows… no one WATCHES TV ANYMORE. NO BULL **** THE RATINGS A TERRIBLE! .
EVERYONE WATCHES ONDEMAND OR SOME OTHER FORM OF VOD.
what // what why!! this show is so perfect, it legit gives us a good idea of what we will end up like if we dont smarten the **** up..
im done.
Keep wayward pines going. You could even do another story where they wake up years earlier and show the changes of the earth. Or another one where they wake up years later after wayward pined died off. KEEP IT GOING.
I’m also going to boycott FOX, they cancelled Backstrom, too. I’m done getting into new Fox shows only to have them cancelled first season, like Almost Human.
With so much reality TV crap on air why in the hell can you not keep this show running? I mean, seriously FOX! Is no one smart enough to continue writing a script for this…. If you need help I’ll be more than happy to help out. It’s a very interesting concept with room to explore and all you can do is cancel. How about growing some balls and taking a chance. You can get in contact with me thru my email but make it quick because a lot of us want to see a continuation.
I am immensely confused on why Wayward Pines would not continue for another season when it was FOX’s second best preformer! The majority of shows that are currently running are based off of terrible plots and have characters being portrayed by amateur actors! Wayward Pines has an excellent cast and creative plot! WE NEED WAYWARD PINES!
I’m hooked, love to see it continue.
It was an awesome show… Why they keep the crappy shows on, but won’t make more of the good ones+?? Definitely would watch another season of wayward pines
Boooo! Highly disappointed. So much crap gets to stay on the air, I don’t understand. I absolutely love this show. Starting to think these tv executives really aren’t too bright.
This is complete bull ****. I’m going to boycott this station.
I agree!
