Wolf Hall is returning. In a recent Radio Times article, the series’ director Peter Kosminsky said the British historical drama will have a second season. Though, it may take a few years.
Based on Hilary Mantel’s Thomas Cromwell novels, Wolf Hall premiered on BBC Two and on PBS last year.
Kosminsky said the historical series, which follows Cromwell’s (Mark Rylance) rise to power in the court of England’s King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis), may take a few years because Mantel has not finished writing the third book yet. Season one covered the first two novels in her planned trilogy. Kosminsky said it may take at least two years:
She has still got at least a year of writing on the novel and we have to get it adapted which will take quite a while because it’s probably going to be quite a thick book. It’s not going to be any time soon I’m afraid. Two years down the road I would think, probably.
He added that there might also be difficulty getting the cast and crew back together:
Getting that team back together is a challenge [as well]. First of all we have to get Peter Straughan the adaptor to be available and we have to get Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis into a studio together at the same time. They are both international superstars now so it’s going to be quite a challenge but we will do it.”
The director remains optimistic though, saying the second and final series will be “exciting” and unpredictable:
What’s particular exciting it it’s not, ‘OK, just dramatise the short period of time between Anne Boleyn’s death and Cromwell’s death’. She’s going back in time, she’s going into memory, earlier parts of Cromwell’s life, and so it’s not going to be predictable in any way.”
What do you think? Did you watch season one of Wolf Hall? Are you excited for a second season?
Unfortunately for our American cousins Wolf hall won’t return until 2019.
I have to agree what an amazing installation of an epic drama in our colourful English history.
Egerly awaiting season 2 of Wolf Hall! Being an American TV is a welcome distraction from the madness of our country right now. I much prefer to watch the ruling class in history with all their faults. Wolf Hall is so brilliantly done that it takes me away for a little while. Please hurry with season 2.
I can’t wait for season 2.
One of the finest adaptations of English history – and particularly Tudor history – which continues to captivate as it compounds the imagination. I keep waiting for a happier ending, but watch with morbid fascination the role of English queens under the rule of a tyrant. Utterly captivation with great acting, musical scoring, and costume detail. You can actually smell the fur on Cromwell’s collar.
Can’t wait for Seasons 2 and 3!!! Please hurry!!!
Well said, Linda! Smell the fur of his collar…brilliant. I so agree. I love this particular period, and would recommend “The Autobiography of Henry VIII, by Margaret George. Terrific reading. Big, thick, meaty fictional “diary” of Henry, from childhood, to death. Have read it about 8 times now. Enjoy!
Can’t wait for Season 2. Absolutely loved Season 1. Have watched it twice and may watch it a third time. The acting was excellent and drew you into the historical drama. Very excited to hear it will continue!
Part One of Wolf Hall was so good, I watched it again! Looking forward to this riveting series Season 2!
We are waiting for the continuing story of this excellent drama
I loved Season One and am looking forward fir Season Two however long it takes.!
Please continue. I can’t wait. I have read everything to date… It is outstanding
Absolutely loved season one! Can’t wait for season two!
We look forward to the next, and final season of this high quality historical series.
YEA!!!!!! I binge watched Season 1 on Thirteen.org so I can hardly wait for Season 2!!!! The acting and writing are beyond amazing!!! Damien Lewis as King Henry is perfection!!! I had not as yet seen Mark Rylance perform but now I will be keeping an eye out for him!!! He is quite remarkable as Cromwell!!!
This is one of the most quietly compelling series PBS has ever shown. Mark
Rylance is unflappably ironic and relentlessly scheming as Oliver Cromwell, and Damien Lewis is barely controlled in his rage and self-indulgence as Henry VIII, a virtual volcano about to erupt. Gret acting, superb scriipt, a throughly engaging production eagerly anticipated for a second season.
You have confused your Cromwell’s, my lady. A volcano would indeed require eruption to pit Oliver and Henry together.
You meant “Thomas Cromwell”.
Thomas Cromwell, no relation to Oliver
Actually, Oliver Cromwell was Thomas Cromwell’s great nephew. But you are right; they are almost 2 generations apart in time.
Glad to know the show will continue especially since there’s more to Cromwell’s life after S1. Rylance is terrific, BTW.
so glad to see this returning loved the 1st season of it cant wait
