Wolf Hall is returning. In a recent Radio Times article, the series’ director Peter Kosminsky said the British historical drama will have a second season. Though, it may take a few years.
Based on Hilary Mantel’s Thomas Cromwell novels, Wolf Hall premiered on BBC Two and on PBS last year.
Kosminsky said the historical series, which follows Cromwell’s (Mark Rylance) rise to power in the court of England’s King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis), may take a few years because Mantel has not finished writing the third book yet. Season one covered the first two novels in her planned trilogy. Kosminsky said it may take at least two years:
She has still got at least a year of writing on the novel and we have to get it adapted which will take quite a while because it’s probably going to be quite a thick book. It’s not going to be any time soon I’m afraid. Two years down the road I would think, probably.
He added that there might also be difficulty getting the cast and crew back together:
Getting that team back together is a challenge [as well]. First of all we have to get Peter Straughan the adaptor to be available and we have to get Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis into a studio together at the same time. They are both international superstars now so it’s going to be quite a challenge but we will do it.”
The director remains optimistic though, saying the second and final series will be “exciting” and unpredictable:
What’s particular exciting it it’s not, ‘OK, just dramatise the short period of time between Anne Boleyn’s death and Cromwell’s death’. She’s going back in time, she’s going into memory, earlier parts of Cromwell’s life, and so it’s not going to be predictable in any way.”
What do you think? Did you watch season one of Wolf Hall? Are you excited for a second season?
I just finished watching the first season of Wolf Hall and am looking forward to the second with great anticipation. It was the best series on tv that I’ve watched in a very long time. So well done. Thank you.
I thought it was a superb production in every way — the acting, settings, costumes, brilliantly dark atmosphere and constant tension. I hope the next season comes sooner than anticipated!
You bring history to life. You have embraced technology in persuit of our heritage and with valid research given us a glimpse into our history. His story is our story. You make me crave more!? With thanks Victoria.
I enjoyed the first season. I wait hoping for the next one to come soon.
Wolf Hall is probably the best series I’ve seen on PBS since I Claudius. I’m really looking forward to season 2, no matter how long it takes.
I ordered the Blu-ray set and was completely enthralled. The sets were outstanding! Regardless of their apparent age ( 100’s of years old ) but I could imagine the splendor that they must have held when relatively new. I had seen Damien Lewis in some other American works and was not overly impressed ( not regarding him but rather the content ) actors have to eat. However his performance in Wolf Hall as Henry … was.. what can I say but ‘he was Henry’ Perhaps he was channeling. His best work that I have seen so far. Having the “Tudors”… Read more »
The best tv series ever. I have had to satisfy my longings by repeatedly watching season one. Bring it on please!
Oh how can we wait!? THE BEST TV SERIES EVER! I have had to satisfy my longings by rewatching the first season over and over. Bring it on PLEASE!
I cannot wait. Mark Rylance brought Cromwell to new heights! Damian Lewis perfect as Henry chaotic moody selfish king. I have watched so many times as I cannot count and see something masterful from them each time.
I loved the first series, the actors were well chosen, Mark Rylance was excellently cast. I am watching it again on PBS in USA anxiously waiting for the fallow up. Without Mark Rylance I don’t think it will be the same.
What excellent television! When might season 2 reach the antipodes?
Please BBC bring us an update on the second season of Wolfhall.
