It looks like Xena: Warrior Princess won’t be coming back anytime soon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, plans have been scrapped for NBC’s planned reboot.
Inspired the ’90s TV series starring Lucy Lawless, the revival reportedly “would have explored the romantic relationship that existed between Xena (Lawless) and her sidekick, Gabrielle (played by Renee O’Connor in the original).” Neither Lawless nor O’Connor were attached to the reboot project.
When asked about the Xena revival, NBC chief Jennifer Salke said the reboot isn’t happening right now:
“Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot. I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Xena: Warrior Princess? Would you watch a reboot?
NBC Universal is **** soup. Haven’t had a hit since the 90’s
If that was their plan for a reboot A DEFINITE ‘NO’!!!!!!
No, no, no! Rebooting Xena would be like re-doing Gone With the Wind. It just isn’t done. You don’t redo a classic, or continue it for that matter. Nobody tops Lucy Lawless or Renee O’Connor. The other actresses would be constantly compared to them and it would be a failure. I agree with the other comment someone made of just running it again, starting at the beginning.
Would love to see this series rebooted was a great show had a good run we need more of Xena.
XENA, on NBC.?? their is a joke some were here.?? on NBC, shows should be called, mini series.!! cause they only last one season.!! ask CONSTANTINE.
The romantic relationship that existed between Xena and Gabrielle existed only in the fantasies of a small segment of the audience. I’m delighted to hear that it won’t be made canon, even in a reboot with new actors.
This isn’t true at all, actually. Everyone behind the writing and creation of the show did it deliberately. Renee O connor and Lucy Lawless themselves have said they were in a relationship. It wasn’t explicit or in your face, but it was there. On the contrary, a lack of romance between them only existed in the minds of a few people in the audience.
Shame on NBC for cancelling Xena: Warrior Princess reboot!
Are you kidding me?! I would’ve liked to see that reboot.
This was probably the right decision. They would have needed some very popular actresses to pull this off, and that would have cost MONEY!
I’d be happy, if they just re-ran the original.
