Cold Case: CBS TV Show’s Cancelled, No Season Eight

Cold CaseAfter seven years on the beat, the show’s over for Detective Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris). CBS has officially cancelled Cold Case.

Each episode of Cold Case begins by showing an unsolved crime from the past. The scene then flashes forward to the present day and a group of homicide detectives try to piece together what really happened, using old evidence and new interviews. The series stars Morris, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms.

Cold Case began in September of 2003 and quickly became a staple of the CBS Sunday night schedule. The crime drama had a successful first season and, by season two, was averaging a 3.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 15.1 million viewers. For the next couple seasons, total viewership fell a bit but the all-important demo numbers rose, reaching a 3.8 in season four.

Unfortunately the ratings have come down quite a bit since then. In season five, the show averaged a 2.9 rating and about 12 million viewers. Last season, Cold Case sank lower, to an average of a 2.7 rating and CBS made a choice between renewing ailing Without a Trace or Cold Case. They chose to keep Cold Case but may have regretted it pretty quickly. This season, the show’s ratings dropped even further to a 2.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.6 million viewers.

Should Cold Case been moved to a new night?

So, while the overall viewership isn’t terrible, the demo numbers are and that’s what brings the ad dollars. CBS often has the most total viewers, but they are often lacking in the 18-49 demo department.

To no surprise, CBS has cancelled Cold Case after seven years on the air. The show won’t be back for season eight next fall. Sadly, the show is not available on DVD. It’s believed that securing the rights for the show’s extensive use of period music is problematic.

What do you think? Are you sorry to see the series go? What could have been done to help the TV show’s ratings?

I became a fan of Cold Case just since Jan. of this year; my husband and I enjoy watching reruns together on ION television. I love the format of the show, the actors, and the characters they play. I am intrigued by some of the episodes that deal with sensitive subjects like race relations (integration, interracial relationships). They are handled in a realistic, yet tactful way.

I am guilty of watching episode after episode for HOURS. However, I did start to notice a trend with the MOTIVES for some of the cases. The person who committed the crime was upset, distraught, panicky, etc., because their loved one/friend was leaving to start a fresh, new, exciting life elsewhere, sometimes with some one who was almost a perfect stranger. And the eventual victim seemingly gave no consideration to the ones they would leave behind, or at least, that is how it appeared to the one who became the eventual killer: ‘What about me? What was I going to do without him/her? I needed him/her; I don’t have anyone else. How could he/she abandon me like that?’ Sure, people kill for reasons like these, but to use that same motive for several episodes….It started to become a litttle stale, I think.

At times, the actions of the characters seem unrealistic or unbelievable, and that may have affected ratings. Police officer following up on a whim about a crime all alone, without telling anyone. Walking into a dark house, alone, finding a missing person and falling in love with them. Getting in the face of a Goliath-like suspect when you are a Tinkerbelle. Not saying that those kinds of things don’t happen. But it just makes me think: “Oh, really, now? Be for real.”

And why can’t Lil get with and stay with somebody? What about some action in the other officers’ love lives? Heat up things just a little bit. No need for explicit sex scenes. Just liven things up a little. Show that these folks have a social life outside of the office and outside of the local bar where they hook up at for drinks.

Oh well, these are simply my suggestions. Overall, I really do love the show; it IS better than the great majority of TV shows out there. I think there is still an audience out there for Cold Case. All it would require is a litttle tweaking here and there..

I will never understand why smart series like Cold Case get axed, ….while idiotic, desperate, miserable “celebrities” , soaps and reality shows stay on air…and why do smart people waste their precious times to watch these?….i do not ever wish to understand. I cried after each Cold Case series I’ ve watched….a good cry…watch the reruns sometimes, you’ll know what I mean. NCIS better stay on air.
