NBC has confirmed that their musical drama Smash has been officially cancelled. There won’t be a third season.
The news certainly doesn’t come as a surprise. Everyone but the most optimistic viewers assumed that the series was already done.
Smash premiered very well last season when it followed The Voice. Despite the strong lead-in, the ratings declined as the first season wore on.
NBC renewed it anyway with an order for 18 installments. They no doubt regretted that move when season two debuted to poor numbers. The ratings got worse and they chose to burn off the remaining episodes on Saturday nights, rather than simply pull the show off the air.
The last two episodes of Smash are scheduled to air on Sunday, May 26th. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall soon enough and wrapped up the ongoing storylines.
What do you think? Did you like Smash? Are you sorry that the series was cancelled?
I thought it was a great show but I think the downfall of ratings is because the lead character didn’t really make it to the big time she got screwed at every turn and everyone knew she was the best
Okay after watching and rewatching here are some questions I have: 1. what happened with Ivy and Derek and the baby? Was it a boy or girl? Did Derek fix his image? How is Ivy adjusting as a full time mom? We all know she would miss performing. 2. What happened with Jimmy and Karen? Did they stay together after he got out? Did Karen ever win a Tony? Can she win a Tony? Cause like after all that work it’s only fair. 3. What’s up with Julia and Michael? So because she was cheating with him her whole marriage… Read more »
why can’t we bring a season 3 for Smash? this was left so wide open for a lot of different directions to go in. I loved this show. the cast was everything!
I remember watching the 1st season of smash when it came out and I liked it I didn’t know the 2nd one was had ever aired I just finished power watching both seasons and I absolutely loved the show I hated for it to end I think it’s worth another shot. I definitely watch it
I’ve just finished binge watching Smash over the past 6 weeks & loved it. I love Theatre Musicals & am disappointed there’s no Season 3. If I’d have known I would have watched it years ago. Going back to watch Season 1.
Loved it. Glad to see it on Prime so I can enjoy it again. It has high production value and is very cinematic; the characters were very engaging. Season sidelines the most interesting character which is Bombshell the show itself. It is so intrical to the story it becomes an entity. But mainly I believe its final demise was its appeal to Theater People. We are the ones who really get it and the storylines and character motivations. Unlike Glee, which had the elements of High School and Competitions to appeal to a broader audience. This show was about grown-ups… Read more »
I didn’t seven know about the series until it came on to Amazon Prime. Now I am crushed as I see it wasn’t renewed for a 3rd season. It was so enjoyable and I couldn’t stop watching the episodes one after another on Amazon. I guess I will have to start season 1 again!
I like bed smash!
I really loved this show. I looked forward to every episode. The casting, the production and the music were all wonderful. I still have every episode taped. I can’t believe it got cancelled. Seriously … with all the reality crap on TV today? I know reality TV is really cheap to create, and unfortunately people settle for poor quality everything more and more now-a-days. I believe technology has so damaged our attention spans and need for quality, every thing is about making fast money and speed. It is sad that you can pay $200 for a ticket to a Broadway… Read more »
