The FOX network had great success with their Prison Break series for four years. They’ve now introduced a new TV show that revolves around Alcatraz, the most famous penitentiary in the United States. Will Alcatraz run for years or will it be quickly cancelled instead?
The Alcatraz series begins with the following statement: “On March 21st, 1963, Alcatraz officially closed. All the prisoners were transferred off the island. Only that’s not what happened. Not at all.” It turns out that every prisoner in the facility mysteriously vanished and they start reappearing nearly 50 years later, looking just the same.
FBI Agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill), Detective Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), and Alcatraz expert “Doc” Soto (Jorge Garcia) work together to capture the felons and try to uncover where they’ve been. Others in the cast include Jonny Coyne, Parminder Nagra, Santiago Cabrera, Jason Butler Harner, and Robert Forster.

The FOX series debuted last Monday with a pair of episodes that averaged a 3.3 in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.05 million total viewers. It was the best series premiere that FOX has had this season. What’s more, there seemed to be very little erosion as the two hours progressed, a good indication that those viewers would return the next week.
And they did. It’s not uncommon to see the numbers slip by 15-20% in the second week but Alcatraz only dropped 9% in the demo and about the same in total viewers. Last night’s episode drew a 3.0 in the demographic with 9.03 million.
The show is currently averaging a 3.2 rating in the demo and 9.71 million total viewers. It’s the sixth highest rated scripted series on the network this season (out of 16) and registers a “B” on our FOX report card. It’s outperforming venerable shows like House and Bones and freshman shows like Terra Nova and The Finder.
Unless the ratings continue to fall, it looks like Alcatraz will be around for awhile — hopefully long enough for the mystery to be solved in a satisfying way.
But, what do you think? Do you like Alcatraz? Is it worth watching week after week? Do you think it should be renewed for a second season or cancelled?

Why cancel the show!!! Anyone who had brought it in DVD should gets. Refund … That’s like buying a suit but only getting the waist coat and then hearing the rest of the suit is no longer being made… Just a phuking tease
THE SHOW ALWAYS KEPT YOU ON THE EDGE OF THE SEAT”.
This is a show that definitely needs to be brought back. Hope it will be reconsidered. It has a great mystery element and is a show that keeps one’s interest.
how can you leave an ending like that. does Rebecca die? What about the rest of the inmates? its stupid to keep all the reality shows that nobody can stand and take away the great suspense and educational shows like alcatraz. i waited all summer long for it to be back on and now with no thought of what viewers think its cancelled..BRING IT BACK…
BRING ALCATRAZ BACK I LOVED WACHING IT WITH MY BROTHER…FOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BING IT BACK
I love the new TV series Alcatraz, I think it is very brilliant and really original. I like that every prisoner has excaped the placed in 1959 and look exactly the same as they did even after 50 years, since last seen alive. I love the action and the storyline being told from begining to the very end. If they cancel this really good series, Fox is no different from NBC, who cancels a lot of good shows, before they can begin it’s storyline.
Good show. Bring back at least this show has substance.
has anybody heard if alcatrez might be picked up by another network such as the sci-fi channel or at least tie up the loose ends not to let us hanging.
Was so sad to here that Alcatraz was cancelled after 1 season. Wish the network gave the show a chance to prove itself. I myself am tired of all the reality shows and thought I found a show I could enjoy for a while and thought the concept and subject of Alcatraz was very interesting.
show had a good interesting format however it somehow didnt keep the viewers totaly up to speed with the plot etc, however I feel with a bit of adjustment it could be a very interesting show enouugh that people would return each week, one thing was against it was it was that two top shows were on in the same time slot The voice and Danceing with the stars which cost the show a great number of female viewers, dispite this it was a good show and so should be given more time to expand and develop.
love the show
The show offers something different from most other TV fare. I find the story lines interesting and the characters appealing, so I hope the show returns for a second seaason.
Great show. Hope its around for awhile. Really, it’s the only show worth watching on fox. But I doubt fox will keep it. They tend to cancel their best shows in favor of more mindless so-called reality type shows. Really, this is the only show currently on fox that people with a brain would care to watch.
