American Idol premiered its 15th and final season on FOX earlier this month, but is the series really coming to an end?
The current panel of judges and Ryan Seacrest spoke about the end of the series at the Winter TCA’s on Friday, and they all teased that the series may end now, but fans could see a reboot of the series at a later date.
Why is this talk happening now? It is the ratings for this season that have people wondering about the future of the series. The ratings for this season have been great so far. Ryan Seacrest said that people that had not been watching the last couple of seasons are returning to watch the final season.
Jennifer Lopez also spoke about the possibility of a return for American Idol. According to TV Guide, she said:
“Whether [Fox is] making a mistake or not? Everybody just goes with a feeling in the moment. And if that’s their feeling right now, that’s their feeling. You never know. With a format like this that could work at any time, it’s possible. … I haven’t thought about it much, but hypothetically if that happened, American Idol has a special place in my heart, and it’s something I would consider. [I’ll] always be there when they call.”
During this farewell season, fans can expect the return of Kelly Clarkson and more former Idols to the series. The return of Simon Cowell is also teased for the finale in April.

Love american idol. Please keep it alive. Look forward to it every year. Please keep it alive.
No, thanks. I prefer American Idol to end after 15 seasons.
American idol should do auditions behind a curtain or something and not judge someone by their appearance…..To me you could posibly get the best singer in the world this way. they let go too many just because they do not look the part……
They already have a show like that. It’s called “The Voice.” American Idol has produced way more successful and household names then The Voice.
So glad this show is ending. The voice is far better than this show.
I LOVE the show and always have, but this set of judges is my favorite by far! They are funny, but manage to stay kind, but still get the criticism spoken out loud unlike The Voice which none of the judges can manage to give ANY criticism constructive or otherwise. Also, American Idol has had far more success with their winners and non winners than The Voice has had as well!!! I think it should stay on the air and The Voice should go off the air instead. The only thing that The Voice has over Idol is that they… Read more »
I agree with the exception that I wouldn’t want The Voice to go off the air. I get tired of the judges endless praise as well, but I still like the show.
Doesn’t FOX realize that people are only watching because it’s the final season and they want to see all the big “surprises” that they are promising? Doesn’t mean people will continue watching if the show doesn’t get cancelled.
I only partially agree with you. Truth be known, my daughter and I watch for the tryouts mostly. From there, we pick our favorites. Then we watch to see how far they go and that’s about it. Each season it is so VERY frustrating and sad that it is more a popularity contest than a true talent competition. The only difference this season AND DEFINITELY NO DIFFERENCE (at least not to my daughter and I) is that people from the past (been there done that) will grace the stage from where they came.
