Babylon 5 may still be coming to The CW. It was announced in September 2021 that a reboot of the sci-fi series was in development for a potential Fall 2022 release.
With The CW now being up for sale sold by Warner Media, a delay is in the cards – but the series is still in development. It will be a complete reboot of the series and not a sequel. The original Babylon 5 aired for five seasons and 110 episodes.
Per The Mary Sue, the series could land on the network in Fall 2023 instead. Regarding the development of the Babylon 5 reboot, creator and writer J. Michael Straczynski said:
“Here’s the bottom line. Yesterday, Babylon 5 was in active development at the CW and Warner Bros. for fall 2022. Today, Babylon 5 is in active development at the CW and Warner Bros. for fall 2023. That is the only difference.”
A plot teaser for the possible reboot was also released:
“John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war.”
What do you think? Do you want to see a reboot of Babylon 5 on The CW?
If Babylon 5 is getting rebooted soon, just call it “Babylon Five”, OK?
I’m excited to see this series with updated effects and a new storyline written by a JMS who has only grown as a writer. The original series will ALWAYS be there and I love it more than any other. But it needs new life, new stories and it must go on. I’m excited and can’t wait for it to breathe new life. Change is inevitable.
B5 is my all time favorite space scifi, I’ve watched it on release, when I was a kid, and I’ve re-watched it many times since then.
I don’t want this project to happen, I don’t want to start loving original B5 less, like it has already happened with star trek, star wars, matrix, dr who etc
wondering if its gonna be a complete woke/diverse/inclusive pile? should have been a “sequel/continuation” of the first series, tired of the “re-imagined” shows nowadays
Hate to break it to you but the original run was one of the most ‘woke’ TV shows ever put out, the creator was atheist but still included almost all religions and even made up new ones for alien races, featured history of many different cultures, heavily used anti-racism stories and race was a huge part of the overall plot, not sure he can top that so the reboot will likely be the same as the original, if old viewers have grown new prejudices since back then it would their issue not the showrunners, they can just not watch.
you don’t know what woke means. original was an epic saga with great values embedded in it. while woke means a lecture on modern days social issues of america dressed up in a skin suit of a franchise, where story and character development are secondary.
people will indeed not watch it, same as with other franchises that were “improved” into the ground in the past years.
No ‘woke’ meant acknowledging other races and cultures when it was coined, now it’s been altered into a different context by some to criticize, whether fair or not. I think I’ll trust JMS will do the show a service, as I’ve followed everything he’s done since the 80’s and he still has the talent to do a good series.
what it “meant” is irrelevant, no reason to use the outdated meaning
I’d just like some clarification here, we are talking about the original series, and not some form of remake of it. I only ask bc Bab5 fans are some of the tightest ever known and no remake will ever make it. I’ve wanted to see this series from start to end for a long time now. Netflix had it free, but then charged for the final season.
When we watch Babylon 5, it will be with both sadness and pride, remembering that most of the cast in real life has passed on and now lives beyond the Rim.
It’s a reboot by the same creator J. Michael Straczynski. I’m sure it’ll be a different telling but with familiar ideas, likely aimed at fans old and new. With the original series remastered recently and this greenlit last year, it’s great to see the franchise come back to life.
StarGate would be a reboot I would want a little bit more than Babylon 5. Babylon 5 the original series is great and unfortunately remains relevant. It is hindered mostly by dated graphics from the space scenes. The rest still holds up well enough, if you can stand the 4:3 resolution on a full HD or 4K TV. Rather get me prequel. Or a sequel. The same writer is involved, so why not go those routes? The writer won’t need much updating on the world that Babylon 5 plays in. Anyway, in the end it would be great if some… Read more »
I thought the recent HBOMax release with remastered graphics looked really nice and clean.
They made a sequel series and it flopped as well as some TV/DTV movies that after awhile dwindled into cancellation especially with the death of some main cast actors, the main story was told. JMS himself confirmed a while ago the original B5 universe was dead and WB had no interest in resurrecting it. Now obviously starting over to grab a new audience appeals to them and the only way to reignite it, just glad the same guy is at the helm.
That pic brought back memories. Make it so!
Make it so!
can’t wait. best sci fi show ever!
