What are you going to do, now? The Banshee TV series finale, “Requiem,” airs tonight, on Cinemax. Showrunner Jonathan Tropper, who created the show with David Schickler, talks about why they made the decision to end the show after four seasons, leaving Banshee effectively cancelled by its creative team.
Banshee stars Antony Starr as Lucas Hood, who is back in town after a couple of years, where there is a serial killer on the prowl. The Banshee TV show cast also includes Ivana Miličević, Ulrich Thomsen, Frankie Faison, Hoon Lee, Matt Servitto, Ryann Shane, Lili Simmons, Tom Pelphrey, Eliza Dushku, Casey LaBow, Chris Coy, and Ana Ayora.
Here is what Tropper tells Collider, about the decision to end the Banshee after this fourth and final season:
What made four seasons the right end point for this show, and what made eight episodes the right number for this season? Is that just what you needed to tell this particular story?
TROPPER: The fourth season being the last season was a combination of factors. I was always upset when shows I loved stuck around too long and starting generating extra plot. Once we ended Season 3 and Lucas Hood was basically no longer the sheriff, the premise of the show was about a fake sheriff, so going on for many more seasons, it would have been ridiculous for him to become the sheriff again. The town itself might have had plenty of stories to tell, but it felt like the story of Lucas Hood was coming to an end. All the pitches we came up with, for how to extend that, felt like, “Well, maybe that’s cool, but that’s a different show.” The move to Lucas’ post-sheriff life was the beginning of the end. It was the beginning of the conclusion, and trying to have a conclusion for two seasons, it felt like we would lose some of the immediacy of the storytelling. And ending with eight episodes was really a financial decision. We have a finite amount of money. To have done ten episodes at that budget, we would not have been able to deliver the action we wanted to deliver, and we wouldn’t have been able to deliver the depth of episodes that we’re accustomed to doing. So, we decided to do eight episodes and make them really rich.

Looking back on the run of the series and everything you were able to accomplish with it, what are you most proud of?
TROPPER: I’m just proud that we got a show on the air when there was no precedent for this kind of show. We pitched a show that didn’t resemble any other show, and then we executed the show in a way that it didn’t resemble any other show. On paper, this show sounded pretty insane. We somehow convinced the guys at Cinemax to let us do it, and they let us do it without really messing with it. We had a show that, in a million years, couldn’t show up on a broadcast network, and hadn’t even shown up on any of the premium networks. In the four years since, you do see a lot of other shows like that starting to happen, but I really do think that we put the kind of show on the air, with the cinematic storytelling and action that we were doing, and the kind of heightened pulp, that really carved its own niche and hadn’t been on the air before. I’m really proud of that. I don’t think I could have even done the show that I’m doing now for Cinemax, if Banshee hadn’t come first.

What do you think? Are you a fan of the Banshee TV show? Is it ending at the right time, or do you wish Banshee had been renewed for a fifth season? How do you want the Banshee TV series finale to end?
This IS an amazing series, and deserves to continue, ending it is a big mistake. I seriously hope whoever canceled it realises this. I mean did you create a success just to let it fail?
Please keep it going. It’s awesome. I love every minute of it. Please please please
I just started watching this show and am totally hooked! I just made it to season 3, so please do not end it! I normally don’t watch new shows because they all suck. However, this is sooooooooo different and like nothing I’ve ever seen. To please continue the show. PLEASE!!!
This show needed a 5th season for sure. You’re left not knowing proctors fate, where anyone is going, how Bunker and Brock go. There was more to tell and it’s dissapointing to have just finished watching the 4th season to be left without answers. WHATS LUCAS HOODS REAL NAME? !!
I totally agree, so many questions left unanswered, not fair at all! OMG yes his damn name lol!!!!!
Real Name Of Lucas Hood was “JOHN DEN”.
I really loved Banshee series and I really wish to be continued. It is the best serial I ever seen! Congrats for making history with Banshee, it was really good and I’m sure you can make it even better, don’t give up on it!
just watched all 4 episodes in 8 days .. absolutely gripping .. loved all the characters and stories .. Hope you do a series 5 .. Dont know what to watch now . Bored.com 🙁
Banshee or Justified or Banshee loved both but all good things come to an end to bad, going though withdrews need to ring a new fix
Best god damn show i ever saw
Please, please Please bring Banshee back…This was one of the best shows on, it certainly was the best show on Friday nights. I miss these characters so much. Please rethink this one.
I think that Banshee should’ve extended to 5 seasons. I believe that it would’ve provided much more depth for the characters & a more satisfying ending for the show
I can’t believe it’s the end…. Please bring the serie back to us.
i think there should be another yes i understand the hood case might be reopening but in episode 8 in the ending hood was ask what he going to do and he left town why not make season five with him going to train to be a officer and returning to banshee as the new sheriff and make it more interesting i enjoy the show please give us another season or 2
I have loved the banshee series and would love it to continue. Really quite sad that it’s finishing one of the best to series around. Characters and storyline just brilliant.
I just want to thank you for this great and entertaining serie. I don’t have a specific type of series, all that I like is what is pure, epic and well done. After the end of s04 I felt that it was the end even though we could imagine more, but you kept it high from the start till the end and it’s really rare. Thanks again for those fantastic moments of pleasure and for not wasting our time and making it enjoyable. Chapeau !!
True, i just finished the last episod and i’m feel a lil bit like sad… it’s already that when you have an attraction for the characters in a show.
But everything have an ending !
I waiting for my new next favorite serie… 🙂

I have Been looking for something new for like 3 weeks and now I’m watching Strange things for the moment it’s not as hot as Banshee but its enjoyable 🙂
It can be further extended to Season 5 & Even Season 6. I have a story line up for that & that too very much relevant. It has to be given a chance or else it will be like…What Is This?……There is so so much which can be told & shown.
I’ve loved Banshee from the start but I felt the 4th series got off to a weak start with the different narrative, new location etc. It was only when they got Job back on board that I felt it found its footing. By the end – masterpiece. That was the best final episode I’ve seen in any series. It closed off all the story lines in satisfying and plausible ways and the last 15 minutes of pure sentimentality was the perfect way to say goodbye. I’d love a Job spinoff – the guy is a mix of everything, the show… Read more »
