Jimmy Smits won multiple awards for his work on the LA Law TV series back in the 1990s. Now, he’s back on NBC in another legal drama called Bluff City Law. Will his latest show also be a big success on the peacock network? Will Bluff City Law be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A legal drama, the Bluff City Law TV series stars Jimmy Smits, Caitlin McGee, Scott Shepherd, Barry Sloane, Michael Luwoye, MaameYaa Boafo, Stony Blyden, and Jayne Atkinson. Coming from a famous Memphis family that’s known for taking on injustice, a brilliant lawyer named Sydney Strait (McGee) used to work at her father Elijah’s celebrated law firm until their tumultuous relationship got in the way. After barely speaking to Elijah (Smits) for years, Sydney is suddenly thrust back into the family fold when her philanthropist mother passes away unexpectedly. In the wake of the loss of his wife and in hopes of reconnecting with the daughter he loves, Elijah asks Sydney to rejoin his Civil Rights firm and take on a chemical company whose product may cause cancer. Despite her lingering resentment and distrust, she agrees because she knows that working alongside her father is her best hope at changing the world — as long as they can find a way to get along. No sooner has Sydney returned than she stumbles on a secret that Elijah has been keeping from her that may change everything.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.

*6/16/20 update: Bluff City Law has been cancelled by NBC so, there won’t be a second season.
I really enjoyed this show. I like Jimmy and very happy to see him back. I think you should ask people 50-65, I’ll bet you’ll get higher ratings!
I loved this show so refreshing to see Jimmy Smitts in any way his acting is great
Excellent new show I really love it I hope some other channel picks it up
Bluff City Law is one of the best new shows to come along in a dry thirsty desert. One littered with shows that resort to gimmicks, tricks unbelievable characters geared To a dumbed down audience. It would be criminal to cancel this jewel!
Loved this show! I hope they bring it back!!!
Loved this series. Good acting. Good plot and encompassed good family values as well. Bring it back
This is the BEST NEW SHOW we have watched this season!!!!!!!
of course Bluff City Law was cancelled – it was well written and acted – it was quality!
Really good show, disappointed if it doesn’t come back.
This is an excellent TV-law series, great acting and excellently written. We say five stars, bring it back please!
I have seen a lot of television in my 75 years. There are times that shows, like “Bluff City Law”, are cancelled for reasons that seem untruthful. Ratings count in the advertiser-subsidized world of commercial television. We all understand that. So, I question the ratings. On the one hand, fan ratings put this as the top-rated show. Yet, the statistics provided elsewhere tell a different story. Maybe it is not the show that has a problem, but rather the producers and those marketing and placing the show This was a believable, well-acted legal drama with sufficient human interaction scenarios to… Read more »
Agree! The generation 18-49 all DVR or watch on hulu so they shouldn’t count in ratings! Let us more mature audience 50-79 give our opinions. Can’t stand all these evil shows on tv now. Bring back the wholesome shows!
I agree with Ed Fox’s post. I read Rotten Tomatoes and another reviewer that dissed this show. I disagree with almost all of Rotten Tomatoes reviewers as a jaded group with poor taste. The other reviewer obviously was engaged to present a post before the series began. He seems to have spent little real time on the show or topic dismissing it as another boring legal show. It was obvious he had no interest in the subject matter or characters Unfortunately a lot of people depend on reviewer opinion or they won’t watch a show they believe will be cancelled.… Read more »
I thoroughly enjoyed Bluff City Law. I love the characters in the show, the story line and or course I am now a fan every cast member.
They certainly have my vote and I am holding thumbs there is another season.
Bluff City is so great! For once, there is a show that focuses on good people fighting to do the right thing for the individual and for the greater good. And the family and work relationships within the show are realistic and refreshing. The story line is always tough to resolve but in today’s turbulent political and social times, it is so refreshing to champion characters who fight for what is right!!! It would be a serious misstep to cancel this show! I know NOBODY who has access Nielsen ratings and I live in a dynamic progressive town, Montclair NJ.… Read more »
I feel Bluff City hasn’t been given a fair shot. I believe it would improve with a little more exposure.
I love Bluff City Law. It’s well written, well acted and well directed. The demographics in my household are 3 generations of women. 30, 55 and 79 and we all love it!!
