In a somewhat surprising move, the alphabet network has cut a beloved family drama after five seasons on the air. Season six of Brothers & Sisters won’t be on ABC’s fall schedule.
Brothers & Sisters debuted in 2006 and revolves around the extended Walker family of Pasadena, California. The current season features a large ensemble cast that includes Calista Flockhart, Dave Annable, Gilles Marini, Luke Macfarlane, Matthew Rhys, Patricia Wettig, Rachel Griffiths, Ron Rifkin, and Sally Field.
The family drama was nearly cancelled last year but was ultimately renewed for an abbreviated fifth season. In light of some positive ratings, ABC ordered additional episodes, bringing the season total to 22 installments. Unfortunately, those ratings didn’t last.

The numbers slowly declined over the course of the season but really seemed to take a dip in the latter part of the season, just when execs were trying to figure out if it was worth renewing. Rumors started circulating that Brothers & Sisters would be cancelled and then there was word that ABC was considering an abbreviated sixth season to wrap things up.
In the end, network execs decided there just wasn’t enough interest in the show anymore and wanted to use the post-Desperate Housewives timeslot for a new series.
As a result, last Sunday’s season finale will end up being the series finale for Brothers & Sisters. It’s a sad and unfortunate end for a once popular series.
What do you think? Are you sad to hear that Brothers & Sisters won’t be back for season six? Was it time for the series to end?

I cannot believe that ABC would cancel the BEST show in their entire lineup.. I look forward to Sunday night to watch this one show!! I love Sally Field, and the character Nora Walker. And, I love the entire Walker family. Whoever made this “executive” decison is a JERK!!!! What are you going to replace it with, yet another stupid reality show?!! Spare me. I will be watching another network from now on. You have truely disappointed me…
i love this show only show i watched ..please bring it back….my husband and i liked to talk about it . silly as its sounds its was fun to watch….
I can’t believe this show is cancelled. It is smart, dealt with real issues, shows that no family is perfect but can get through anything together as a family and the humor with the characters was truly delightful to watch. I always shared tears and many laughs with the situations they went through each week. I will truly miss this show but thank god I have all the season dvd’s so the show will live on in my home. Big mistake to cancel:(
As an ABC network fan I can’t believe this has been set in stone. I am not 100% sure how ratings are figured out but with so many shows on I find most people DVR, Netflix or watch online to catch up. Why can’t ABC create a page on their web site for polls? Do the fans want another season to have closer or end now? For the fans who watched Brothers and Sisters the show was a heart felt drama that any family could relate or wish they could be apart of. Breath of fresh air and a BREAK… Read more »
I was so relieved this show was canceled! For the last two seasons I clung on for dear life, hoping that the writers would come up with something good, and I was afraid to cancel in case the next great story line would come along. Unfortunately it fell flat and I was surprised ABC had let this go on for as long as it had. Brothers and Sisters strayed from the original story too much. It used to be about siblings coping with the recent death of their father while trying to save the family business. Then one by one… Read more »
Brothers and Sisters, one of TV’s best shows is history. It stands to reason, all good tv goes by the wayside for this reality stuff. When are you executives going to consider the viewers. Good wholesome issues, and you cancel them. It was the only show I watched on ABC, now I guess I won’t have to look up your station anymore. Have you people lost your minds???
Extremely disappointed! This is my favorite Sunday night program. As other viewers said, get rid of Desperate Housewives and enough of reality tv. I think ABC is making a big mistake.
We are disappointed that a wholesome quality show should be cancelled. Get rid of desperate housewives!!
Utterly ridiculous. Just one more reason to leave ABC behind…
ABC killed this show with thier lack of commitment to the program. How many times did ABC preempt the show during the last season?? The viewers never knew when the show was on television! How does a Network hold an audience playing with programming that way?? I’m not surprised, but sad to see a GOOD scripted program go away.
I was very sorry and shocked to hear that Brothers and Sisters will be cancelled for next year. I always made time in my busy schedule to watch the series and to discuss it with my wife, son and daughter. The program will be truly missed.
Unbelievable that this show should be canceled! The acting is superb and the characters developed and real thanks to the writers. Can’t you leave anything for intelligent viewers? Does tv have to be no brainers?!
ABC has made a HUGE mistake!!!…This is unbelievable .. a TV show that had a fantastic cast and story line has been AXED!!! Are you kidding me?? This is by far many of my family and friends favorite show!!..You have just lost your Sunday night viewership by more numbers then you realize.. So very SAD that this decision has been made & I hope your #’s prove that to you during that time slot on Sunday evening!!! That is the bottom line to ABC.$$.Good luck with that..HA! BIG ERROR!!
ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED! I thought this season was great for not having much of Kity and with Rob Lower being gone. I loved Nora and her relationship in the end. I can’t believe they’d cancel it. I LOVED the big family feel and will really miss it. Wish it could be rethought because I think it’s a mistake
There are such few family shows to watch any more and “Brothers and Sisters” had a good cast and original concept to bring both liberal and conservative families together. America needs more to unite us at our core … our families. This show almost did it. It reached a point that you could almost guess the next plot because it would be extreme … older white woman with a black boyfriend, gay couple adopts little girl, only conservative couple adopts black baby, constant new gay people (saul & richard chamberlain was more than a lot of people could handle making… Read more »
