Last season, CBS introduced 10 new shows during the regular 2016-17 season. They cancelled half of them and renewed the other five. How will their new programming do in the ratings for the 2017-18 season? Stay tuned.
CBS shows this season (so far): 60 Minutes, 9JKL, The Amazing Race, The Big Bang Theory, Big Brother, Big Brother: Celebrity Edition, Blue Bloods, Bull, Code Black, Criminal Minds, Elementary, Hawaii Five-0, Instinct, Kevin Can Wait, Life in Pieces, Living Biblically, MacGyver, Madam Secretary, Man with a Plan, Me Myself & I, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Pink Collar Crimes, Ransom, Salvation, Scorpion, SEAL Team, Superior Donuts, Survivor, TKO: Total Knock Out, Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition, Whistleblower, Wisdom of the Crowd, and Young Sheldon.
There’s lots of data that CBS execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
Please renew scorpion!!!

Superior Donuts cancelled? Really! That was our NEW CHEERS! THE ACTORS ARE OLD FAVORITES IN A NEW VENUE.
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL SCORPION!!!
THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN!
I LOVE SCORPION, AND YOU LEFT THEM SPLITTING THE TEAM AND BEGINNING NEW CHALLENGES!!!
SEAL TEAM IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
Yea oh! Omg cbs what did just do?
I hope they bring back Instinct, have really been enjoying this show. You can get rid of Kevin can wait, but renew Man with a Plan.
I Love Scorpion Please renew
No doubt on of three I watch
ABSOLUTELY!
Please please pleeeease don’t shut Criminal Minds down. They managed to pull off a major cliff hanger. You gotta let it run! Atleast for another season!!!! Pleeease!!
I don’t understand how 9jkl is cancelled, yet Superior Donuts with lower ratings is renewed.
Superior Donuts isn’t renewed yet. 9JKL had a lead-in from TBBT and retained less that 50% of it’s ratings.
A lot more goes in than just the rating itself. Ted is right when you can’t retain viewership from a tremendous lead in thats a bad sign. Not even mentioning we don’t know the cost to make each show.
I would love to see Scorpion renewed, I love that show and stay up late just to watch it! It would be nice to have it in a better time slot!
Back 2 Broke Girls!!!
Although the brilliant “Code Black” is not listed here, I do hope CBS renews for a Fourth Season. Season Three is airing very soon to follow the the stories of Angels Memorial Hospital’s Third Year Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Since the Program would be of Four Years duration, it makes perfect sense to see the Residents thru to Graduation. This is a call out to CBS to
P L E A S E renew Code Black for a Fourth Season. I am too invested in the characters now to not see them graduate!!!!
I love NCIS-New Orleans and I would love to see a season 5. I don’t watch much Network TV…I am more into history, travel, sci-fi, and documentary cable television. However, I never, ever miss an episode of NCIS NOLA. I have to DVR, because I work very early hours.
I don’t even really enjoy military/police procedural…because as a Veteran, it us too easy to pick them apart.
I enjoy the people on NCIS-New Orleans, the characters, the story archs, their interactions, and relationships. Please CBS…don’t let the show go!!
I have a feeling that we are going to lose criminal minds this year and maybe supernatural what on earth am i going to watch?
If you are talking about Supernatural rom the CW it has already been renewed for a 14th season. The CW released their renewals a week ago. I’m concerned about the CBS shows I watch. I love Hawaii 5-0 and Scorpion and MacGyver. My TV watching will be completely different next season if CBS does not step up and start giving the OK to some of these shows.
