NBC aired the 200th milestone episode of Chicago Fire earlier this week and it featured the exit of a lead character. Jesse Spencer, who has been on the series since day one, departed the firefighter drama. He has played Captain Matt Casey who, in the story, decided to move to Oregon to take care of the sons of a former Station 51 firefighter who died in the first episode of the show.
Spencer said the following about his exiting the NBC drama, per Deadline:
“It wraps up ten years for me. I think it was pretty organic that he’s leaving and he’s going for three years but is he? We don’t know. It’s been a long time coming when you know how these compadres have gone through life and death together. It’s hard to say goodbye, you know, see you soon, kind of thing. It was bittersweet but I really enjoyed it and we got some laughs out of it.”
Derek Haas, an executive producer on Chicago Fire, said the following about Spencer’s exit:
“I hate that Jesse’s leaving. It was a very difficult episode to write. He’s been incredible from day one of the pilot to right now and he’s one of my favorite people beyond acting. Anytime I was in Chicago, I would call Jesse to get together. Anyways, I have bittersweet feelings or just bitter feelings but I thought the episode turned out really well. I just want to thank Jesse publicly for his amazing service and friendship and for making the show incredible.”
Monica Raymund, the actress who played Casey’s ex-wife, also spoke about Spencer’s exit, per Deadline:
“I just recently found out. I miss my man. I miss my Casey. I wish Jesse all the best. I love him so much. They were so lucky to have him and I’m excited to see what he does next.”
It is always possible that Spencer could return to the series at a later date. Casey is still dating Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) on the show, as the pair decided to go the long-distance route for now.
What do you think? Were you surprised by Spencer’s exit on Chicago Fire? Do you like this NBC show? Will you miss Spencer?
I just saw the next preview. I was so shocked I immediately did a google on it. I’m so sad. I can’t believe he’s leaving. I do t like changes. It takes time to get use to them and then your sad(at least when it comes to shows and K-pop and kdrama for me). I am really sad. I am so grateful that they did not let him die though I would have really had a fit. Well best of luck to him and I hope he will come back eventually
Love Casey’s character. Will miss him in the show. The shoe won’t be the same
I will miss Casey. He’s a great actor and made Chicago Fire special. He will be missed.
I’m not surprised Casey is leaving. It was very predictable. After all, he and Sylvie finally got together, as a couple, after all these years of keeping their feelings in check.
It was kind of lame, making up the story about a former fire fighter, from ten season ago, leaving two sons, in Oregon, needing adult supervision. The older son was more than capable of raising his younger dysfunctional brother. Sometimes Casey makes stupid decisions. Leaving Sylvie is one of them. Chicago Fire & Chicago PD, are up there, with every Dick Wolf production, on TV.
they will replace him with one more annoying 23yo clown :\
Det Er meget trist !!
Si me sorprendió su partida de Jesse, era del que menos esperaba, es mi serie favorita y creo no será lo mismo.
Sad to see him go. A great guy. I love the Chicago series & I hope it will continue
Wow, I really hate to lose Jesse. His character has been amazing and I will definitely miss him. One of my three sons is a firefighter/paramedic, so I really enjoy Chicago Fire.
Yes, I was very surprised to see him leave, but I also watched him when he played on the TV show House with Hugh Laurie. I do hope he comes back and I also hope they keep Chicago Fire on TV. I always look forward to Wednesday nights because I watch Chicago Med, Fire & PD & have watched all of them since they began. PLEASE do not cancel the show or the series as I’m sure the many fans feel the same way. Jesse Spencer has turned into a great actor, I am hoping he is just taking a… Read more »
I love this show, but they should think of ending it. Don’t let them overstaying their welcome, like Grey’s Anatomy does.
I was surprised to see him go, he was one of my favourites. I wish him well but hope he does return at a later date.
He is an intricate part of the show. He needs to be part the show in some context until he returns permanently. Not another actor playing the part.
Yes, I was very surprised. I’m sad to see him go. I’ve watched Chicago Fire from the very beginning.
