Code Black just wrapped its third and final season, but is there a chance for more? Recently, creator Michael Seitzman spoke with Deadline about the possible future of the cancelled CBS TV show.
The medical drama unfolds at Angels Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles — the busiest, most notorious ER in the country. The cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, Moon Bloodgood, and Rob Lowe.
In the interview, Seitzman said he’s proud of the how Code Black ended:
One of the things I always wanted to explore in the show is the nature of grief. I wanted to be honest about it, face it head on, and really explore how messy it is, how mysterious it is, and how miraculous it is when we finally see some light. The way we dealt with it for all three seasons, with our patients and our doctors, is something I’m very proud of, especially the way we delved into it with Rob Lowe’s Ethan Willis this season, in looking at his PTSD and the way his mind processed his grief and guilt when it came to his brother.”
However, the CBS series creator revealed he did have plans for a fourth season:
There’s an aspect to Ryan McGarry’s documentary, which inspired the show, which I always found interesting. When the staff was moving from the old LA County Medical Center to the new one. It shook them up in a very particular way. In a way, there were ghosts in that old building that they found they needed and those ghosts didn’t exist in the new building. It affected the way they approached their jobs and their patients and they wondered if they could still be as intimate with them in the new building. I always wanted to do that in Code Black, take our staff out of Angels Memorial and see what would happen if we moved them into a new building. Flying a plane into Angels seemed to make that an easy creative transition.”
And what are the chances of a renewal from another network? Seitzman says they’re all still hopeful:
The studio has reached out to all of the streaming services. To be honest, we haven’t heard back from them yet. We’re hopeful.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Code Black? Would you watch a fourth season?
Extremely disappointed CBS canceled Code Black! Really hopeful a streaming service or another network picks it up. Excellent show!

Great show..this season was the BEST. Stories, actors, production, etc. Please bring on season FOUR!
I love Code Black and their fantastic cast. Please find a home for this terrific show. I feel like there is so much more to tell about these characters and this hospital. I love Daddy and Mamma and I’m not done watching them.
I love Code Black. I adore all of the characters. I really, really hope it comes back for a fourth season. There is so much crap on tv, we should get to keep such a good show.
Loved the show. Probably my favorite on cbs. Hope it’s picked up
Please bring this show back…too much CRAP on TV and I love this show.
Our family just loved Code Black – looked forward to it each week. Please keep this show on the air – we’d vote for its return anytime! Talented cast, great stories
I Agree with Linda. I love Code Black and I can’t believe it was not renewed. She is right in saying that all the good shows get cancelled and junk and brainless shows are left on the air. Please Please Please someone pick up Code Black. I would love to see it going for 15 or more seasons.
I put off watching the final episode because I am so very sad that Code Black had not been renewed for a 4th season. Why do all the good shows get cancelled and junk or brainless shows are left.
Please rethink your decision and bring back one of the good ones. Thx
The best show ever I hope it returns
Best show ever!!
Yes. It’s one of the best, if not the best, shows on tv.
