It’s been quite awhile since FOX programmed anything but animated shows on Sunday nights — and there certainly hasn’t been anything like Cosmos on the network before. Will their gamble pay off and bring in bigger ratings or, will it be a disappointment? We’ll see.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is a follow up to the Carl Sagan series from 1980 and is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. The series follows how humans discovered the laws of nature and the quest for knowledge.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically the following morning, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
6/2 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context here.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the new Cosmos TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
I’m not usually excited by science, but this show got me hooked! And I almost never watch TV, but this series had me waiting impatiently for each new episode. Furthermore, I was so impressed by the cool things that I learned scientists have been able to discover by crunching some equations that I’ve been taking an online college algebra course! Nerd alert. But -that- is exactly the kind of response that one would hope for from a show like this, right? Needless to say, I will be majorly bummed if there are no more seasons.
Good for you Cole. There’s nothing nerdy about wanting to learn new things and being challenged by new ideas. It’s called critical thinking. Nerds are those who don’t question things and yet impose their views on us all. Science is accessible to everyone; those threatened by it should just chill and open their minds… there are no real barriers to learning science. Science is the most spiritual journey of discovery known to humankind, as evidenced by the great “Ah-hah” moments I experienced watching this great show Cosmos. Without science we’d still be tilling the soil with horses and oxen.
i agree
I feel the show deserves an award. It show just how challenging the pursuit of truth can be. Hope they renew the series. It can do so much good.
i agree hope they bring it back
I realy hope they renewed the show.
it was a 13 week mini series. check back in 20-30 years. what is it that no one understands?
well if you really liked the show you would understand. besides thats how alot of shows get started
I love Cosmos. It’s the best show on TV & should NOT be cancelled!
i agree love cosmos refreshing and educational
I love this series and especially enjoy watching it with my daughter. She says she has learned so much and that it is better than how school would present the info. This is our most favorite show. Please d0nt cancel this great show. It is so refreshing to have an excellent educational show than all the other crap that is on TV. Thanks Fox for carring this program!!!! Please continue for season 2!!!!!
I liked the original version with Carl Sagan, and I think that Mr degrassi is excellent. The special affects are great. I look forward to every Sunday night seeing the show. I really hope the fox network renews for a second season.
I hope it’s renewed, as it’s the best show on TV, by far, and the only one I make a point of never missing. (Actually, that’s not true, I also always see Bill Maher, but I never hope to own a series collection of Real Time, the way I do of Cosmos!)
Generally, I’ve greatly enjoyed the new Cosmos. It’s fundamentally different from the original Carl Sagan version, which is a good and a bad thing I think. The animations are good, and the graphics and music are awesome. the episodes are varied in their content? some discuss large topics like global warming, the fate of the Universe, while others discuss an individual scientist and impact and their influences. Some of the shows though, the content seems jumbled. episode 11 and the early episode on evolution seemed particularly messy. it’s not that I don’t believe in the message that he conveys, because… Read more »
It is a great show but it is more geared to those with a fledgling understanding of science, but that’s fine! I still enjoyed it and learned new theories I was unaware of, especially of the inner cosmos (biology)! I received my B.S. in Aerospace years ago and this jogs loose some old studies I had locked away. Even got me to re-read some of my old course books and papers. What I think is unfair with the rating system that network (and cable) channels use is that how do they account for “on-demand” services such as Comcast’s or Hulu… Read more »
I really enjoyed watching this show. It is wonderful. Every sentence is loaded with so much information to think about. I would welcome more shows in this series. It is more about the facts and logic and not about insulting anyone’s religious beliefs. It is up to the viewers to interpret the way they want.
No question, Cosmos should be renewed. The topics discussed on the show are presented in such a manner that is approachable to a wide audience. By not being too heavy handed on the details of any one subject, Cosmos inspires its viewers to pursue science by giving them the choice to perform further research/study on the topics that peak their interest, while still providing the main/key points on other topics that do not. Although the courses in my major have gone much further in depth on the subject matter presented in the show, I am entertained by the historical perspectives… Read more »
The three paragraphs which you have submitted here are essentially the embodiment of all the topics I feel strongly about. It is refreshing to hear someone else with a like minded attitude about so many subjects, considering that I live in Florida where the point of view is either right winged, religious, racist, anti-science, or all of the above. I am currently enrolled in community college here but feel surrounded by idocracy, as you put it. My eventual goal is teaching physics at the college level so I was wondering if you would suggest a state or school which would… Read more »
Keep it up! We need more science teachers to make the topic fun for the next generation. I received my A.A. in Physics from my local community college in 2011 on the other side of the country (San Diego, CA). I’m currently working on my B.S. in Bioengineering: Bioinformatics with a particular interest in proteomics. Unfortunately it is taking forever to complete due to scheduling conflicts and exorbitant amounts of coursework. Even with that minor annoyance, I still have similar aspirations as you do, but only after a few years in industry.
As for the request you made in your concluding sentence, I cannot definitively say which school might be the best future alma mater for you, nor the single state housing said school; you will have to do that leg work yourself. As for narrowing down the possibilities from the scope of the entire country, that I can help you with. If getting away from a populace where the predominate point of views you listed above are held in high regard is paramount in the selection of the school you choose to further your education at, you will have to strongly… Read more »
Go anywhere else than the areas I identified above and you may be force fed the ^virtues^ of intelligent falling over gravity (to provide one example). Good luck in your search Derek W, and may you have prolonged success with your studies.
I’m really impressed with how smart you think you are. Professing themselvelves to be wise (smart) you have become fools (stupid brainwashed dullards). The series is loaded down with pure-d speculation (add a heapin’ helpin’ of faith in so-called “science” in the form of unobserved evolution taking many BILLIONS of years) plus a ton of brainwashed liberalism in the form of naked Marxism (aka global warming, Agenda-21 agendas, and evolution) and you throw in a big dose of God-hating atheism and voila you have Cosmos redux. LOL. You folks are so very predictable. Now go worship and salivate on Neil… Read more »
Nice try Ken Ham, you can’t fool us by saying your name is randy.
randy you really don’t know what your talking about. if you want to listen to some preacher in church and believe what he say’s then read the bible. what they teach is not from the bible. the stories are but the doctrine isn’t. as for evolution it has been observed. in the stars and the universe. also earth. but you wouldn’t know. understand that GOD is the master scientist. he created science. he created physics. he created it all. you CAN believe in GOD and science. but you conservatives only see black and white. no grey area’s and that’s why… Read more »
You are so predictable. And I really DO know what I’m talking about unlike you and the libtards that salivate over s silly tv program promoting godless athiesm and leftist Marxism.
ya don’t know what your talking about. and what is a libtard? you like to call names because you ignorant? ah yes that’s it. and randy since your such a genius tell me what a Marxist is? i mean really tell me. and where in the land of the free are they? and how do you know that i’m a Marxist? do you know me? have you ever met me? what do i look like? these are terms the right throws around that have no basis. so i guess if anybody disagree’s with conservatism you are a Marxist. no randy… Read more »
This picture (http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/47319122.jpg) pretty much sums up my response to you Randy. I was by no means trying to appoint myself as some supremely wise/intelligent individual; completing some college level physics, biology, and chemistry courses does not make me an expert in any respect. Given how quickly you are willing to attempt to ridicule/impugn our characters, makes me seriously doubt the credibility of the expertise you so vehemently claim to have. Similarly to dji’s request, I too would like to see you explain (in detail) what your “buzz words” actually mean, since you believe so strongly that they embody our… Read more »
For whatever reason, when I last checked, my first reply appeared to have been deleted. Please excuse my second analogous reply.
Randy. I request more posts from you! The more you write the more you prove that all of us so-called “godless athiests” and “leftist Marxists” are miles above you on the mental ladder. Every word you write brings one more superior being to our cause!
Thank you Randy for PROVING that there is no intelligent design. You are a perfect example of the trail and error of evolution. Thought is obviously NOT your strong point. Please keep posting..so everyone can view how dumb the other side is.
What I’m trying to say is that, even though Cosmos was labeled as a 13 episode miniseries from the get go, it should be considered for a more permanent position on the air waves.
I am left quite speechless at the idea of Cosmos no longer airing. The topics are presented with such intelligence. I look forward each week to hearing what Neil DeGrasse Tyson is going to say and what the visuals will be that enhance what he has to say. It’s amazing to think no one wants this show! Not even the Science Channel?! I wanted first to watch this show because it’s hosted by a great scientist I first gained interest and admiration for on the science channel. It was a bonus to find that Brannon Braga who did Star Trek… Read more »
The Cosmos show is awesome! It’s intellectual food and, as ManofReason put it, I too could imagine 100 more episodes very easily. I really hope there will be many seasons to come. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a great host and his passion for science is palpable. There is so much new knowledge being discovered about the Cosmos and we need to spread the ideas far and wide.
Fox definitely made a scheduling mistake for Cosmos. “Why would they schedule this for a Sunday night?” was my first reaction when I tried to include it in my Sunday night viewing schedule. They put it up against some of the highest rated shows–shows that I am already hooked on. What did they expect? I looked for a repeat showing, but there was none.
On Sunday night, we would like to be entertained, not be educated. There are other times for this!
In my opinion, this is a great night for Cosmos. I can’t name another show that is on Sunday that is as entertaining to watch. The argument that there are other highly rated shows on can be used for any night.
And Nova is on Tuesday night, Nature on Wednesday night…
sara it’s on NATGEO on monday nights. you can watch it then.
Awesome show! I hope they decide to make more. I know the original Cosmos was a mini-series limited to a set number of episodes to cover what Dr. Sagan had written about in his book. But with so much new scientific knowledge about earth and the universe I could easily imagine another 100 good shows if good writers and producers give it their best. I do fid it somewhat embarrassing that more Americans are interested in watching Honey Boo Boo or Outrageous Morons instead of an awesome show like this. I bet more people will watch if they make more… Read more »
