Dexter: New Blood wrapped on Showtime on Sunday, and the finale has some viewers wondering if the series could continue with a new chapter – perhaps following Dexter Morgan’s son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.
[SPOILER ALERT]
The season finale of Dexter: New Blood features the death of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) at the hands of his son. However, it’s possible that this might not be the end of the series. Harrison could follow in his father’s footsteps, allowing the story to continue.
Executive producer Clyde Phillips said the following about the possible future of the Showtime series, per Deadline:
“As I mentioned, this show is a huge asset. When people start bingeing this after the finale, I’m confident the numbers will continue to go up. It’s up to Showtime to make the call to me if they want more. If they ask me if I’d like to make a continuation of this, I would say yes. I have a lot of things going on but I would drop everything for this and say yes in one second.
Harrison is such a complicated character and he has within him the seeds of the dark passenger. He’s capable. Look at that takedown of Dexter in the end, what’s in Harrison is that he has to kill this man.
Also, Harrison brings a different perspective to the vigilantism of it all than Dexter did, which was kind of surprising to Dexter. He brings this youthful, optimistic innocence, that he and his dad are basically Batman and Robin. Think of every time we take out one of these bad guys how many lives we’re saving, that this bad person is not going to kill. Dexter never thought of that. Dexter was only taking out bad guys because that was his code.
As for the decision to kill Dexter in the finale, Phillips said that it was the plan all along. He noted:
“We knew this had to happen, and I think it had to happen for the audience as much as for the character. To see him get caught time and time again and get out of it at a time and time again is a disservice to the audience. And I think there’s a certain truth in this storytelling, in authenticity in the storytelling.”
Having worked on the Dexter series for its first four seasons, Phillips felt that New Blood was a suitable way to end Dexter Morgan’s story — particularly after what many felt was an unsatisfying ending of the original show.
“How often does a show get to do a second finale? I think the answer is never. With the bad taste that the original finale left in everybody’s mouth, we had this rare opportunity to redeem the show and to give the audience the respect it deserves, the authenticity it deserves, and the gratitude for sticking with us.”
What do you think? Do you want to see a second season of Dexter: New Blood on Showtime?
Dexter will continue, his son will go to Calif Dexter will be his conscience as his sister was for him.
Bad decision there is NO DEXTER WITHOUT DEXTER
Please have a second series of dexter
Renew the show and have Dexter be the one in Harrison’s conscience, guiding him
What a bummer. You killed Dexter . No I don’t want that wimpy boy to be the new Dexter .
finale of a good season was so bad that I’m not sure I will be re-watching the original series. thanks for disintegrating one more character
It’s on paramount plus now. Love this show never missed any episode of it. Enjoy it and love it.
until the finale
Please for the love of god no, just no.
Not sure how I feel about the finale. I would’ve liked it better if Batista took Dexter out for what happened to Doakes instead of the son. He should have had more of a part in the last episode, and got to interact with Dexter. Michael Hall has that primal look about him kind of monkeyish caveman type, the son character is not interesting enough for me to continue the series. Definitely disappointed that this was not a multiple season Michael Hall return to Dexter.. Who knows maybe he didn’t want to do several new seasons, and this was just… Read more »
No. This bring back was to give us a proper ending to Dexter’s journey & this was a most fitting conclusion. Let it rest in peace.
No, I do not wish to see and will not watch a second season of Dexter: New Blood with Harrison in the lead sans a healthy, breathing, perfectly alive Dexter! I’ll be mourning Dexter Morgan for quite some time, thank you very much. I do, however, appreciate what I will forever consider the appropriate finale to the series Dexter, as I will from now on pretend Dexter Season 8 doesn’t even exist!
They need to bring Dexter back to life somehow or I won’t watch and I speak for many. I hope Showtime and Clyde Phillips are listening.
“Dexter” without Dexter really wouldn’t make a lot of sense, would it?
Besides, I have plenty to keep him busy down here in Hell. He won’t be able to kill the bad guys, obviously…. but he can definitely modify “the code” to torment them for a while.
No Dexter without Dexter. As simple as that.
If a continuation occurs, I cannot see it happening unless that Ghost of Dexter is included in the same way Dexter’s sister was shown. Just a thought!!
Without properly explaining ‘the code’, how is Dexter’s son able to continue? Besides that, couldn’t say that Harrison inspires as much as Dexter did.
At least it is a proper end to Dexter. Seeing this series made me realize, how much I missed it.
Let’s see if this series continues. Not sure if I’ll follow it again.
Dexter did told the code to son already, so yes possible continues
I expect that I will watch it, but probably next 10 years waiting to new season xD
