The fat lady is singing for The Fosters, but she’s got another number left on her setlist. Although they’re not calling it “cancelled,” Freeform has announced there will be no sixth season of The Fosters TV series. The Freeform TV show will end with a “three-part limited series event” which will air this summer, but that’s not all. The cable network has also ordered a still untitled 13-episode spin-off series, starring Maia Mitchell (pictured above) and Cierra Ramirez (below).
A Freeform family drama, The Fosters also stars Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Hayden Byerly, Noah Centineo, and David Lambert. The story centers on Stef Foster (Polo), a dedicated police officer, and school administrator Lena Adams (Saum). An interracial lesbian couple, Stef and Lena are raising a blended family of foster, biological, and adopted kids, in San Diego, California. The fifth and final season of The Fosters returns on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 10:00pm ET/PT with its 100th episode.

CIERRA RAMIREZ AND MAIA MITCHELL TO CONTINUE ITS LEGACY (TITLE TBA)Freeform, Disney’s young adult television and streaming network, announced today that the GLAAD award-winning series Vanity Fair calls “groundbreaking,” and Refinery29 calls “consistently revolutionary week-in, week-out,” will conclude with a special three-night limited series finale event next summer, which will lead into a new series following the lives of Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) as they embark on the next phase of their young adult lives. “The Fosters” will return for season 5B with ten episodes on Jan. 9 at 8:00 p.m. EST, including a monumental 100th episode.
Joanna Johnson, Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige said: “First and foremost, we want to thank our fans – our supportive ‘Fosters Family’ – and Freeform for fostering this show. It’s been the privilege of our lives to get to shepherd this beautiful family through five seasons of love, laughter, heartbreak, tribulation, and triumph – and message to the world that DNA doesn’t make a family, love does. All while allowing us to explore some of the most pressing social issues of our era. What do you think? Is The Fosters TV show ending at the right time? Should Freeform have cancelled or renewed it for season six? Do you plan to check out the spin-off? Let us know, below.
The Fosters has been a wonderful series. The writers really did a fantastic job in its progression and the conclusion was exactly at the right time and fulfilled my expectations. It felt complete.
I think there should be another season about how they’re growing up. I wanna see if Callie ends up with that guy! And what happens with Emma and Jesus and Mariana! I need more episodes!! And also is Brandon will last in this marriage.
Finally a show that teaches through life lessons, two women who showed the world what real love is between each other and their children. A family could actually sit and watch this show and not worry about the content. So it does not makes sense that they cancelled this wonderful show. The ratings are their, the fans are their, the writers of this show have proven there awesome brilliance, I’m sure if approached they would gladly accept the challenge if they were to bring this show back. The fans are hurt and confused as to why this decision was made,… Read more »
I totally agree with the below viewers. I am totally disappointed that there will not be a sixth season. I couldn’t wait till the following week to see what developments would be going on with the Foster family. The events of the family were very much realistic, caring, and genuinely loving. You could sit down and enjoy the show with your entire family (children, moms / dads and even your grandparents) and not feel embarrassed of the content shown. You can’t say that about too many programs these days!!
This is sad news of no sixth season. I watch every episode since the beginning. I felt it was a very educational show
What sad news of no sixth season. I enjoyed watching this and if I wasn’t home I would tape it. I never missed an episode.
How can THAT be how it ends:'( will jesus recover, does Matt and Mariana endup together? Will Brandon ever find someone? Jude? Does callie and aj get in to art school? Wow really? I don’t knowif I can watch Netflix shows if they leave like this!
Fyi i was a child to in foster care and can relate to this a lot!!
Thete is so much more they could have done with this show… i am very sad to see it end.. even tho there is a spin off that i will be watching!!! It still wont be the same without the rest of the family… i love this show… i wish they would stop cancelling the good shows. And leaving crap shows on tv. À
I cannot believe freeform is cancelling The Fosters. My husband and I love this show. I think it is timeless, deals with real life, current issues that arise in families as well as foster/adoptive families. So many other tv shows are nothing but teen fluff where the Fosters brings up issues that trigger discussions and understanding. The new spinoff sounds like more teen fluff. While we love Callie and Marianna on the show it just doesnt sound interesting enough to carry the show the way The Fosters has. We will miss seeing the other members of the Foster family. I just don’t understand why cw is taking the Forsters off I love this show please bring season 6 it is so sad to see go
There should be a season 6 I have watch every episode and its sad to see it go. My family has been involved my whole life with the Foster system and this show is soooooo amazingly close to what’s happened in every day life for some people…….. I’m glad to see that they showed the kids graduate but what’s next for them and the rimeraz family and their doca. They have left it took far open like they did with switched at birth. If your ending a show dont leave cliffhangers that will never be answered.
I have been a fan from day one and being gay it was truly a gifted show and the cast so real a lot of times I have cried just like tonight march 13th, 2018 I wish I could belong to a family such as theirs never judgemental caring, go through good and bad times in which we lack so much in the real world please bring the show back or at least bring the cast to the new spin off in which I will watch. Not a lot of real shows on such as the Foster’s I will really… Read more »
There really needs to be a season six so all is fans can have closure! Please do not end the show like this. There’s so many questions that can’t go unanswered. Just end it with season 6 ! Were just asking for one more season that’s it!
I just binged watched the whole show…all 5 seasons… I absolutely Love it! Please please do not cancel it, there isn’t real TV on anymore, ever since the writers strike many many years ago, tv has been inundated with REALITY TV…which sucks! (as if we need someone else’s reality shoved down our throats, I’m a mom to an autistic son, a wife of a retired Police officer of 40 years and my daughter and 3 grandkids live with us…TRUST ME…I do not want nor need anymore reality!)
