According to the NY Post, ABC is considering a reality show version of General Hospital. The show would revolve around the personal and professional lives of doctors and nurses who work at a Los Angeles hospital (rather than fictional Port Charles, New York).
The new show is apparently in the very early stages of development and filming has quietly begun at UCLA Medical Center. ABC is said to be considering this new “General Hospital” show for the daytime schedule.
The crazy thing is that 50-year-old General Hospital could end up being replaced by a reality show version of itself. Though the soap opera has been performing well this season — reportedly rising 18% in total viewers year-to-year (2.37 to 2.81 million) — the network is still on the look out for ways to expand their audience and cut costs.
What do you think? Is ABC considering replacing General Hospital with a reality show version? Would you check it out?
I don’t even watch General Hospital at all, but why would you want to make a reality show based on a fictional show? How stupid is that?
This may or may not be a good show, but it should NOT replace General Hospital, which is in a creative resurgence! I hope they don’t cancel it when it has finally become the show we loved once again!
I HATE reality shows. Won’t be tuning in for that mess. When will they learn and how many failures will it take?
No, I’d never watch anything on ABC after the soaps are gone.
This is a terrible idea. And you know what? While GH is the only thing I watch on ABC now, since the cancellations of AMC and OLTL, if they were to cancel the real GH for a fake GH (yes, I said that. Do appreciate the irony), I would be disappointed as heck, and I would fight alongside GH fans for all 3 soaps—AMC, OLTL, and GH—to get picked up somewhere else. But I think I’ve kind of reached acceptance about ABC not giving a damn about their audience. I haven’t accepted that OLTL and AMC are gone, and I… Read more »
This has been done many times really on night time television. Last season it was NY Med. It’s been done on Discovery with shows like Trauma in the ER. I really love this type of show and hope NY Med returns. To replace though GH with it would be stupid. As a long time viewer of GH I would boycott it just on principle.
Um, NO the article said it’s shopping to Cable or syndication. Which doesn’t mean it won’t replace it but there’ s a bit more hope than you state.
I’ve never seen the show, but if you ask me anyway, if they replaced it with a reality show, they’d regret immediately. Maybe if this was a weekly show in primetime, but a daytime show in the daytime, NO! Not gonna work.
Stupid idea i would never watch it the idea stinkd keep gh just ehere it is abc eill lose me and everyone i know if you do thiis ludicrous idea
abc I will say this only once. You cut GH and I WILL delete you from my television.
Worst idea yet. I am so sick of reality TV. If they make another dumb mistake they lose the rest of their viewers . They need to wake up & put OLTL back on. GH is the best it has been in years and the best show ABC has period. Soap fans are a force and very loyal.Loyalty is an important thing. I will record GH not a reality or talk show they get no loyalty & could care less about them. Wake up ABC soaps matter. The rest is just crap I can do without and many feel same… Read more »
This has got to be the worst idea I have ever heard of in my entire life. Can you imagine the flack that ABC is going to get with this? Everyone who watches GH is going to have a complete fit and I will be deleting ABC from my cable forever.
Stupid idea. Keep the original on or boycott ABC
It’s a terrible idea that will fail. Reality shows are everywhere, one worse than the other. General Hospital is actually doing well now. I think they already made that mistake once before by taking off One Life to Live while it was successful only to replace it with some failure that I can’t even remember. They sunk millions into Katie Couric’s talk show that is nothing special. The few times I’ve tried to watch it, I’ve turned it off because it was too boring. Talk shows are everywhere. Reality shows are everywhere. This idea is another loser.
I AM SO SICK OF REALITY SHOWS!!!! This is the dumbest idea!
I agree with all the reply’s as I have been a faithful viewer of General Hospital for years and was very angry about ABC cancelling All My Children and One Life To Live.
These soaps were my very favorite soaps and if General Hospital is getting good ratings why try to destroy the only soap ABC has left. You do not see the other channels drop their soaps. Why does ABC want to fix something that is not broke.
