The laughter has ended. Showtime has cancelled the I’m Dying Up Here TV show so there won’t be a third season. The dramedy series ran for two seasons and 20 total episodes.
A Showtime comedy-drama, I’m Dying Up Here stars Melissa Leo, Ari Graynor, Michael Angarano, Clark Duke, Andrew Santino, Erik Griffin, RJ Cyler, Al Madrigal, and Jon Daly. The story centers on the regular performers at Goldie’s comedy club, owned by Goldie Herschlag (Leo). She is as tough as it takes to be successful in this business, for the sake of her club and her comedians. While the first season focused on landing a big gig like Carson, season two explores what comes next.
The series launched in June 2017 and drew a tiny 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 167,000 viewers. The ratings perked up a bit over the course of the 10 episodes and the freshman year averaged a 0.04 rating with 143,000.
Despite the low ratings, I’m Dying Up Here was renewed for a second season and those episodes kicked off in May 2018. The demo was consistent with a 0.04 rating and viewership was up by 24%, averaging 178,000 viewers.
Though viewership improved, it was still very low and so, it’s no surprise that Showtime opted to pull the plug. The cable channel remains in business with two of the show’s executive producers, Jim Carrey and Michael Aguilar. They both executive produce Showtime’s Kidding series, which also stars Carrey.
What do you think? Did you like the I’m Dying Up Here TV show? Are you sorry that there won’t be a third season? Should this show have been cancelled?
I loved the show. Great writing. Something different from the usual fare. I also liked it came on Sunday nights because that time slot often has nothing worth watching on. I looked forward to ending the weekend with a good show. I hope the producers will try to get the show on another network, maybe FX or FXX. At least do one more season to wrap up storylines. Everyone let’s tweet, email, petition producers and FX/FXX to get I’m Dying Up Here back on on the air. Same for another excellent show gone too soon – The Riches. There needs… Read more »
This was a great show, superb acting. I loved the stories and the whole crew. It was something different and in the 70’s. Please bring it back or I’ll be very sad : (
I can’t believe this show was cancelled. It was good and something different. The acting was superb. I have been looking forward to it coming back and I’m sorry it’s gone : (
One of the best shows on TV. Not sure why it was barely promoted considering Jim Carrey co-executive produced it. What a shame it didn’t get at least 2 more seasons.
One of the best shows on TV. It’s too bad it was barely promoted and had such low viewership. What a shame!!!
I can’t believe “I’m Dying Up Here” was cancelled. It was my favorite!! 🙁
Bring it back I liked , I was really looking forward for the next season. What a shame ☹️ I’ve tried watching kidding and I can’t seem to like it ; perhaps if I watch few more times it will grow on me.
I just finished binge watching seasons 1 and 2. Loved the show. I am new to Showtime. I hope there will be a season 3. I also really like ‘kidding’.
great show — too bad — much better than 95% of current programming on all stations
Very disappointed to hear the show is cancelled. I really enjoyed it. I totally agree with what Cheryl said below.
I loved the “rawness” of the show. It reminded us that everyone has secrets. And those secrets will find their way to the surface in one way or another. Sad to see the show go so young
Very disappointed the show isn’t going to continue.
Shame on showtime
I am very disappointed to hear that Season 3 has been cancelled. This is one of the better shows on tv at the moment and deserved so much more than the lacklustre ratings it achieved. I suppose that’s what happens when you look to the masses for approval. Personally l would much rather see more of this calibre of show than the mindless drivel that seems to bring in the high viewing numbers.
I really enjoyed the show, I’m terribly disappointed in its cancellation just as I was with Vinyl.
Did producer Jim Carrey feel more like “producing” and funding his show?
