As we first learned in November, Netflix has cancelled Marevel’s Daredevil TV show. A couple of weeks prior to that news, executive producer Erik Oleson announced he had pitched Daredevil season four to Netflix, but struck out. Now, we’re learning that Netflix decided to pass on a fourth season featuring the Man Without Fear, despite high viewer demand for the series.
A Netflix superhero drama and part of The Defenders TV show franchise, Marvel’s Daredevil stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Ayelet Zurer, Vincent D’Onofrio, Royce Johnson, Amy Rutberg, and Geoffrey Canton. Based on the Marvel Comics character, the series centers on Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (Cox), the blind superhero with heightened senses and abilities. Although he founded a law practice with friend Foggy Nelson (Henson), Murdock also fights for the citizens of Hell’s Kitchen whose troubles lie outside law enforcement’s reach.
That’s evident in the latest numbers from Parrot Analytics which reveal that Daredevil ranked fourth last week in viewer demand among all digital originals in the U.S. across all streaming platforms.
Demand for the sightless superhero series was surpassed only by three shows (Narcos, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Stranger Things, all from Netflix) during the week ending December 1, the chart shows. The chart measures “desire, engagement and viewership” with weighted values that, for example, give heft to the total “likes” a show accumulates but give greater heft to the total number of actual viewings.
Season 3 of Daredevil was released in October to upbeat reviews but the critical judgments being made at Netflix were more about corporate realities than creative achievements.
While Netflix ponied up for production costs for the Marvel shows, the streaming service had zero ownership stake in the IP. That limited upside was acceptable until Marvel’s parent, Disney, announced next year’s launch of Disney+, a direct rival to Netflix that will have Marvel Studios content as a flagship in its formidable armada.
Disney will also be withdrawing its past and present content from Netflix in the months ahead. That effectively reduced the Marvel shows on Netflix to the corporate equivalent of refugees.
Marvel has indicated we haven’t seen the last of Matt Murdoch, despite the Netflix cancellation. When we know more, you will too.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Marvel’s Daredevil TV series? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a fourth season on Netflix? Sound off in the comments.
Enjoyed it, and I really am debating whether to cancel my Netflix subscription or not since it’s one of the few remaining shows I watch on there.
What a shame that Netflix canceled Daredevil. I always enjoyed Netflix shows and Marvel shows. If Netflix is Solely responsible for the cancellation of Daredevil Netflix really should post exactly why they canceled the series.
Luv Daredevil!!!!
OMG great series! Don’t cancel!!
A fatal error for Disney. They have zillions of other heroes they can do. Leave Netflix with what it has. I wont be subbing to that service. I already have enough streaming services.
Speaking only for myself here, but if Disney+ reboots/recasts these shows–particularly “Daredevil”–I won’t be watching. The casts and showrunners had a LOT to do with my enjoyment of the shows. Not interested in seeing some bland ciphers shoehorned into the roles just for the sake of being new.
Doesn’t this help Disney+ in its battle with Netflix? If demand is so high, Disney+ can renew the show and add it to the lineup when it launches and probably lure some subscribers from Netflix in the process.
Charlie Cox is terrific as Daredevil, and I will miss his friendship with Foggy and Karen. Season three was very strong and I was shocked and saddened to learn that it was not reviewed for another season. His relationship with his mother was very well done after Daredevil got over the shock that she was a nun. Finally, of course Wilson Fisk was the perfect villian with his own love interest. I was also impressed with the work done by Dex and special agent Nadeem. All I can add is bring Daredevil back, it was an error to cancel the… Read more »
The only way it is coming back is on Disney+. You will never see Daredevil again on Netflix since the IP was not theirs.
