Could there be spin-offs for Modern Family and Empire? Recently, FOX boss Dana Walden spoke with Deadline about the future of the two hit TV shows.
Modern Family is headed into its ninth season this fall. ABC has already renewed the sitcom for a 10th season and co-creator Steve Levitan recently admitted that season 10 may be the end for the Emmy-winning comedy. Meanwhile, Empire debuts its fourth season on FOX on September 27th at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Speaking to Deadline, Walden said there’s no plan in the works for a Modern Family spin-off:
We haven’t had conversations about that. I think that Chris and Steve would ultimately be open to the right idea but I don’t think they are eagerly pursuing it.”
However, the FOX chairman did report there have been several talks about an Empire spin-off:
We’ve had conversations for a full year about a potential spin-off, no one has written it yet. Ultimately I think if something comes organically out of the show, we’d pursue it. We don’t want to force it on the show because if it doesn’t feel organic it will feel like it will be just a distraction from the flagship. We really believe in the show, we want it to live for a very long time and at a certain point, after one-two seasons, the creators felt that the flagship was the priority and we support that.”
What do you think? Do you watch Modern Family and/or Empire? Would you watch a spin-off of either show?
