Murphy Brown recently wrapped its 11th season, but will there be a 12th? Recently, creator Diane English spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the future of the CBS TV show.
A revival, the comedy series stars Candice Bergen as the titular Murphy Brown, who is now hosting the CNC morning show, Murphy in the Morning. The cast also includes Grant Shaud, Faith Ford, and Joe Regalbuto, Nik Dodani, Jake McDorman, Adan Rocha, and Tyne Daly.
In the interview, English told THR there are political issues to address if CBS renews Murphy Brown for a second season:
It depends on what’s going on. If there’s a season two for us, we wouldn’t be back in the writers room until May. That’s six months from now, so who knows what kind of situation we’d be in. I don’t think I would want to be more political, but certainly the show has always been flinty and sharp in its approach to things. Our main thing is, can we make it funny? Can we make people laugh and at the same time get them to think about something? Especially in this era of Fox News when so many people are just getting their information from one source, and that source is so biased. And the same with CNN.
And what are the chances of a renewal? English says she’s optimistic:
We’re in a tough time slot, opposite football, and at 9:30. It’s kind of tough for comedy, but we’re doing better than what was there before. We win our time slot in entertainment programming almost weekly. And so I think it bodes well. I’m optimistic. I haven’t been told anything yet, but I’ll learn more very soon.”
What do you think? Did you see the Murphy Brown revival? Would you watch another season?
Murphy speaks to me and for me. This show tries to address concerns about Women, inter generational relationships and the survival of the Free Press. I may have some of her secretaries!
Hell yes! Please keep it going! It was the one bright spot in my week.
Yes, I want it to be renewed!
Yes I want it to be renewed! ! I miss it already!
I hope that CBS decides to give Murphy Brown another season and places the show on Monday nights at 9pm, where the show previously had many successful years.
Yes, bring it back for a 12th season. It’s starting to hit its stride again. Important voice, smart and funny.
Please renew Murphy Brown for another season. I love it!
I loved this show then and now. Casting my vote for Season 2!
Please renew Murphy Brown for another season! My friends & I love that show! It’s agreat comedy but it’s also intellectual; needed for these times!
Love Murphy Brown & so do my friends. It’s a great comedy but it leaves you thinking; quite unlike those shows like Man with a Plan where the male characters are bumbling idiots. Please renew the season!
More Murphy please
I want more Murphy Brown… don’t change Murphy. Her political views is central to the show!
I would want to see MB return, the old characters are just hitting their stride, and the new ones are growing and developing. It hits the topics of the day in a manner that allows us to laugh out loud and we need to belly laughter.
Absolutely. Still love it. But the writing could use improvement. It makes sense that Murphy might have softened over the years, but she has lost too much of her edge. And they are wasting Tyne Dale’s extraordinary talent. Still every episode has been enjoyable except the one with Hillary Clinton, under the guise of a look-alike. Although it was an attempt at being clever it just came off as clumsy and awkward, and might’ve turned audiences off early on
Loved it. More episodes please. Life is tough enough these days- good to be able to laugh about it and make people think
I would definitely like to see Murphy Brown continue. I felt the episodes dealt with relevant issues and made valid points. I like the old characters as well as the new. I like the interaction between mother and son.
