ABC’s mid-season medical drama, Off the Map, recently concluded its first season on the air. The alphabet network’s been looking for a new hit drama and this one was produced by veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. How does Off the Map stack up? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two?
Off the Map revolves around six doctors who have “lost their way” and travel to a remote South American jungle to help those in need and to try to rediscover the reasons why they wanted to become physicians. The series features the talents of Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The medical drama premiered with a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The TV series won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. ABC decided to give Off the Map another chance to attract viewers by rerunning the first episode the following night, in place of a Private Practice rerun, and it retained much of the Grey’s Anatomy lead-in audience.
Unfortunately, that’s still not a great start and subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Off the Map is the second-lowest scripted series on ABC that hasn’t already been officially cancelled, averaging a 1.7 in the demo and 4.96 million viewers. It ranks below doomed No Ordinary Family and just above doomed Detroit 1-8-7. In short, unless ABC really needs to keep Shonda Rhimes happy, there is no reason why the network would bring Off the Map back next year for season two.

I am so hoping this dhow gets a chance at a second season-it’s a really great show!!
The entire cast is so likeable with great chemistry, and the whole of the first season has been a joy, really gripping stuff, and no “filler” episodes that felt like padding in any way.
This show is just waiting to be discovered. I think it will eventually become an international success, with its blend of action and drama, IF given the chance (ie no knee-jerk cancellation before the show takes off).
My daughter and I love Off the Map and watched it every week. Word needs to get around about how good it is. Keep it!!!!!!!
Keep the show! I would rather watch this than the junk that is out there at this time slot.
I LOV THIS SHOW I THINK ABC SHOULD KEEP IT.I THINK SOME HEADS SHOULD ROLL AT ABC SOME WELL DUMB ******** ARE CALLING THE SHOTS LETING ALL MY CHILDREN AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE GO AND OFF THE MAP FIRE THESE DUMB ******** HIR SOMEONE YOU KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING.!!!!!!!!
Our whole family, ranging in age from 18 to 48, like the show and have watched every episode except the last which we are so disappointed we missed.. We hope it stays on this next season and hope to see an expansion of the the lives of the characters and see a glimpse into what brought them to the jungle.
Yeah, im back, just wanting to say DO NOT cancel off the map!!! I love it, i never missed an episode! Its just so amazing! U abc people are suposed to be creative, well come on, that show has so many possibilitys, work with it. Dr. Fuller is the best, amd i love Dr. Clark too, dont kill her off. And dont kill my show!!!
Its the only show out there based adult content that my young teenagers “could” watch during spring break if they stayed up late that I wouldn’t have to worry about, its more realistic than reality shows, filled with moral dilemmas with a touch of romantic love & gives you something to really think about instead of just plain sexual far fetched bs in most other shows, ppl like only arousal shows with no mental capacities. I. Watch no other tv, this is the only show I watch…..since csi!
I agree with Julie! Keep Off the Map! At least give it a better chance than just 13 episodes! Get rid of Private Practice and put Off the Map after Grey’s! Private Practice has always been a ridiculous show that I’d much rather see cancelled than this new medical drama. Save Off the Map!!
I love this show. If they cancel it, I am not going to watch any new shows that ABC runs until they are in their second season. It is too disappointing to get hooked after one season only to have the show cancelled.
I loved the show, I’m gonna be bummed if it’s cancelled. Stop getting rid of shows that are good and give them a bit longer fo brew ! It’s irritating as heck to get hooked and them have them just end.
This show is tops! I couldn’t wait for the show to air the first time…..I was not disappointed. I did not realize though, that last week was the season finale. What’s up with that??? I was ready to watch the next episode. Brush off Private Practice & start up with Off the Map following Grey’s Anatomy for next season. I agree, Off the Map is a definite keeper!!!
Please keep Off the Map! I love all of the actors in this show. I honestly love this show more than Grays Anatomy. I didn’t know that the show last week was the Season Finale either. I think the Network could have done a better job promoting this show. It deserves another chance.
I have found myself watching off the map recordings over grey’s anatomy and private practice (both of which i’m a faithful viewer). You guys really need to give this show a chance.. the few episodes that you had was barely enough to call a season, let alone a real chance.
Keep it! Great show! Wasn’t everything else in reruns the week of the finale??? I don’t even think they advertised it as the season finale either??? If that’s the case, the network is the problem, not the show. Grey’s and Off the Map should be back to back…get rid of Private Practice if anything. And the new Body of Proof, get rid of that one too. 🙂 But Off the Map is definitely a keeper!!!!
