Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.
Mirror reports:
ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.
What do you think? Did you watch the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV series premiere on PBS? Will you keep watching, even though you know this TV show is cancelled?
I can understand the cancellation. I really wanted to like the new Prime Suspect, but Tennison’s dialogue and story arc were so, so predictable. I did enjoy the funky music and period clothing and hair accuracy, but that’s not enough in this crowded tv series world, is it?
Such a pity ITV cancelled this programme, it was the best thing I’ve seen on TV for ages. I adore the lead actress Stefanie Martini, she’s so beautiful and can really act. Wait for the last episodes and she really comes into her own, there is a scene at the end where she smiles and man I cried,it just got me. The author is a very strong mined individual, sadly she doesn’t appear to want to play ball with the production company for a second series. I even wrote an e mail to ITV stating my disappointment. It would be great if… Read more »
Loved the first episode. Was looking forward to another great Masterpiece Mystery series. Maybe Netflix or Amazon would/could work better with the author. But, at the end of the day, it is her work and her characters.
I loved the original H. Mirren series and watched every episode twice. She and the author were brilliant. I approached this new series with a bit of trepidation but after seeing just the first episode (twice now) I and my wife are completely hooked. I can’t wait to see the rest of 1973 and am quite disappointed that there are no more series in the running. I hope that the producers will reconsider. I wouldn’t miss an episode (twice – LOL)!!
Of course. We finally get some entertainment and it’s cancelled. Frankly I am bored with retooled singers. Cooking shows. Travel shows. When PBS has some more detective shows I will subscribe. Our only station KQET is very limited. Even some movies that are not from by gone days. I really enjoyed Prime Suspect
Im disappointed and disheartened that the artistic differences could not be resolved. I can honestly say I cant remember the last time I was spellbound by an excellent cast and storyline and loved the cinematography and use of time appropriate music. You got me sucked in with Pink Floyd. I dont watch the tellie often dont have cable or internet. I was so thrilled but now letdown. I will cherish the rest of the show. Great cast. Excellent show.
Iam so disappointed that ITV have cancelled my favourite show due to artistic disagreements with the author. The next series would have been better seeing Jane as a detective. I even e mailed ITV with my disapointment. I would love the show to be commissioned by another TV channel which seems unlikely. Whatever happens we are privileged to witness a star in the beautiful and talented Stefanie martini, she is mesmerizing and in the last scene of the series she had me crying by doing subtle and nuances gestures, her face tells a thousands emotions. Let’s hope she may get a… Read more »
Now that is unfortunate! I really got into it last night and was looking forward to much more. I am also quite miffed about shows not given a fair chance.
P.S. That actress is excellent.
Probably not. I’m sick and tired of being left in limbo. They never actually end a season anymore, but leave you hanging there and then…no answers. Prime example: Homefires.
Omg, I’m so disappointed! The first episode was GREAT! Stefanie Martini plays a GREAT young Jane Tennison and the rest of the cast was also wonderful. Lynda LaPlante should take a moment to think of her fans before axing a second season. REALLY TICKED OFF! But at least there will be a compete storyline in one season.
If they guarantee not to end on a cliffhanger that will never be resolved, I’ll continue watching. I liked it.
What a disappointment. I’m just watching the first episode now. I’ll keep watching but I’m sad knowing that it won’t continue. With all the bad TV out there it’s a mystery why quality shows don’t make it.
Gosh, I haven’t even watched the first episode. Obviously, the tiny brained folk are running ITV these days.
Agreed, but watch it – its very good!
It wasn’t ITV that cancelled it was the author ….
It’s a shame it had to be cancelled due to the authors whim. I never watched the first one with Helen but I do think that Martini was doing a very good job and the cast also. I will continue to watch it this season
They could’ve made Prime Suspect: Tennison into a sequel set in 1974 instead of a second season. You know, like it could’ve been known as Prime Suspect 1974 in the UK.
I love the show. Why would they cancel it?
Read the article above. It explains the reason.
