Just because they cancelled Castle doesn’t mean the Alphabet Network is done with its male lead. ABC has ordered The Rookie TV show, starring Firefly veteran Nathan Fillion straight to series.
Deadline reports ABC snagged The Rookie in a competitive situation. In addition to starring, Fillion will also executive produce the new “light” crime drama with Castle executive producer/co-showrunner Alexi Hawley.
Here’s more from the Deadline exclusive:
Written by Hawley, The Rookie is inspired by a true story. Fillion plays John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD. At an age where most are at the peak of their career, Nolan cast aside his comfortable, small town life and moved to L.A. to pursue his dream of being a cop. Now, surrounded by rookies twenty years his junior, Nolan must navigate the dangerous, humorous and unpredictable world of a “young” cop, determined to make his second shot at life count.
Hawley and Fillion executive produce with The Mark Gordon Co’s Mark Gordon and Nicholas Pepper, along with Michelle Chapman and Jon Steinberg.
The Rookie draws parallels to another big package headlined by a proven TV star that the Mark Gordon Co. took out two years ago, right after relaunching as an independent studio with backing from eOne. That package, drama Designated Survivor with Kiefer Sutherland attached to star, also garnered interest from multiple networks before landing at ABC with a commitment matching that for The Rookie‘s. It is now in its second season on the network.
In addition to Designated Survivor, on which the Mark Gordon Co. serves as co-studio with ABC Studios, MGC also produces Grey’s Anatomy and Quantico on ABC, Criminal Minds at CBS, Ray Donovan on Showtime, and the upcoming series Youth & Consequences on YouTube. At ABC, MGC also has a put pilot commitment for Broken Record, executive produced by Meghan Trainor.

Hawley got his break on Castle where he was a writer from 2009-12, landing his first producer credit. After a break, he returned to the series as executive producer/co-showrunner at the beginning of Season 8. He also served as executive producer/co-showrunner on The Following and created NBC’s State Of Affairs.
What do you think? Are you a Nathan Fillion fan? How do you like the sound of The Rookie TV series? Do you plan to check it out when it premieres on ABC? Let us know, below.
LOVE The Rookie!!! Hope it’s been renewed for a second season. Great show & perfect casting!
Loved the pilot but why not put it on on Thursday or Friday when nothing else is on?
I would love to see Nathan star as the Rookie. I was a fan of his and watched all of the Castle shows.
I saw the first episode and I’m hooked. He brings so much realism to the show. Great subplots also.
so ABC canceled an AMAZING TV crime drama, only to create another mediocre TV crime drama starring the same actor doing almost the exact same job? ok ABC
I can see your point; but personally, I’d like to actually see the show before I say anything about it. No offense, it’s just my opinion.
So ABC deleted an AMAZING TV crime drama to essentially create another mediocre tv crime drama with the same main character doing almost the same job? ok ABC
LOVE Nathan Fillion !! Cannot wait to see him in a series again.
One of the best things Nathan Fillion brings to the screen is his charm. We have enjoyed watching him play various roles throughout the years (Captain ‘Mal’ was our favorite) and he shines through each and every time. We believe he will ensure ‘The Rookie’ is a success because he’s talented, charming and of course, his boyish good looks.
I’ll give it a try. What’s the expected date?
change the title to avoid confusion with the abc series that aired 1972-76.
Love it. Thankful to have Nathan back on my TV. Can’t wait!
I feel the same! I was so excited when I first heard about it – I called mom, & told her … she’s just as excited for it as I am, lol!
I’m interested in seeing Nathan create his character. Since the words “humor/humorous” are used in every description of the show, so I have a great feeling about it!
It’d be really nice if I knew what TIME it will be showing, rather than having to search through a bunch of other shows. (That’s such a pain!)
hahahahahahahahaha has flop written all over it
Sure am a fan, sure will watch!
OOPS I dropped the mic
I’ll give it a try. But they will really have to keep it away from anything “Castleish”. And don’t put a female for him to have conflict with.
No. Will not work. Just trying to get that Castle Season 9 in.
I agree, Terry! As much as I love and appreciate Nathan and his many talents, not sure I can watch him in this. Sounds like it’s going to be Castle 2.0 and I just don’t think I can do it. I’ll try to give it a one shot, but can make no promises.
I love it and I love Nathan Fillion
You think? I see it as something a lot different. With him being the “low man on the totem poll”. Cops are going to resent him, & constantly try to get him to quit. I’m really interested (as I said earlier) to see him create his own character from scratch. With Castle, I felt that he didn’t have much of an opportunity to expand his character all that much; this is a chance for him to build a new character — I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do with it! Anyway, I truly hope that you watch… Read more »
