Is Second Chance getting a second chance? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producers Howard Gordon and Rand Ravich discussed the status of their sci-fi cop drama.
The series premiered on January 13th.
Second Chance stars Rob Kazinsky as Jimmy Pritchard, an irritable sheriff who is killed at age 75. He gets another chance at life, however, when he’s resurrected as his younger self.
The series went through several changes before its current incarnation. Based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it was previously titled The Frankenstein Code before being changed to Lookinglass before being changed to Second Chance. Then, in October, FOX cut the episode order from 13 to 11.
In the interview, both Gordon and Ravich addressed the episode cut, saying it has nothing to do with FOX canceling the series early:
First of all they’re spending money on reshoots, which is great. You don’t do that for [a show you don’t believe in], but it’s also put right after American Idol. We got the Empire slot. There is not a better slot on Fox, so if that’s not a show of faith. … It really is a scheduling issue. They offered us 13 [episodes]. They said, “Do 13, but we only have 11 continuously.” For storytelling purposes we said, “So, then let’s not do it.”
Ravich added that it was them who “begged” the network to reduced the episode order so they could better tell the story:
It was our choice to tell the story in the way it should be told and not have these two little episodes hanging out there that had no meaning.”
The premiere of Second Chance did okay in the ratings, receiving about 4.7 million viewers.
What do you think? Did you watch the premiere of Second Chance? Would you continue watching the series?
I loved the show and can’t believe it might not be coming back! Really hope they continue it ..
this show is great and im really looking foward to see what will happen in the next season. please do not cut this show it has so much interesting drama and it has great potential
Please don’t cancel the show its great very thrilling and keeping you interested and love the storey between Pritchard and Mary
This show is great. Had good ratings and good cast. Fox is very foolish if they cancel it.
Don’t cancel! Good show! I’m watching all the S1 episodes on Foxnow now! 🙂 And quit with the freaking reality shows PLEASE! It’s SO overkill! Even if they were truly ‘reality’, which they’re not, there’s just way too many. TV has become the pits and it bites even more when you think of how much we pay to watch this crap! So leave the good shows alone & get rid of ‘reality’!
I don’t appreciate the networks cancelling good programs and adding a bunch of reality shows. This is why people go to cable stations to watch more entertaining programming.
This is such a great show.its the only reason I watch this station. There is so much trash on TV why would you stop something so good I just binge watched 6 hours of it.
I am anxious for more episodes of Second Chance. I looked at again on my cable on demand (more than once). I loved Tim McKay on White Collar. This is just as good.
We absolutely love this show. There arent enough good series on and every time we find one we love, it disappears. Please keep this show.
Please keep Second Chance. Too many trashy “reality” shows on.
We are waiting anxiously for more ‘Second Chance’. We could not believe the ratings – the show is GREAT!
Love this show. Don’t cancel please!
This series is not the average, s o it keeps you intrigued.
Found this show on demand and can’t believe it has been cancelled. I hate it when bad shows are renewed and good ones are taken off.. real shame! This is one show that both my husband enjoy.
It would be a shame to cancel this show. It is rare to come across a show where all the characters seem to fit together so well. The story is interesting and the acting is good. Second chance really does deserve a second chance.
I like this show and would like to see more seasons. All to often those who like Sifi are not enough number wise to satisfy corporations bend all out on ratings/ profit and shows are killed after 1 season, i hope that this is not the case here. Greater commitment to longevity and backbone/ resilience to stand behind the product with much greater advertising before and during to maximize turnout of the limited group who normally would watch if they knew about it, as well as not changing original time slots on those who watch it on TV vs those… Read more »
