TV show description:
Unfulfilled with his life as a successful corporate lawyer in New York, Steve Sullivan (Steve Byrne) returns home to Pittsburgh for his father’s 60th birthday. While there, he learns that his Irish-American father and Korean mother — Jack (Dan Lauria) and Ok Cha Sullivan (Jodi Long) — are preparing to sell the multi-generational family business, a bar known as Sullivan & Son.
It doesn’t take Steve long to realize that he really belongs in the old neighborhood and starts helping to run Sullivan & Son. He becomes the bar’s resident “bartender/lawyer” and seeks a more meaningful and rewarding new life.
Jack Sullivan has run Sullivan & Son for over 30 years and is happy to be working alongside his son. He’s a laid-back and wise man — qualities that have helped him stay happily married to Ok Cha for so many years. She takes tough love to the extreme and lets others know what they’re doing wrong. She’s frugal so is initially upset about Steve giving up his big job but is delighted to have him back home.
Steve’s younger sister, Susan (Vivian Bang), is consumed by her one-sided sibling rivalry with Steve. He’s the golden child and Susan can’t seem to do anything right in the eyes of their mother. Still, that doesn’t stop her from trying.
Carol (Christine Ebersole) has been the bar’s resident party girl for thirty years and is more than a little forward with men. A single mother, Carol has a very close relationship with her son Owen and sometimes acts more like a frat brother than a mother. Owen (Owen Benjamin) has been Steve’s close friend since childhood. He’s not the brightest guy but is eternally optimistic and loyal to the end. He can’t seem to hold down a job so spends a lot of time at the bar, hanging out with his mom and his friends.
A no nonsense and down-to-earth paramedic, Melanie (Valerie Azlynn) also grew up with Steve and is just one of the guys. They’ve always had chemistry but have never acted on it.
Hank (Brian Doyle-Murray) has been a regular at the bar for years. His views on race and ethnicity are often inappropriate, but a source of constant amusement for the bar. Underneath his grumpy exterior, Hank is a kind and beloved member of the Sullivan & Son family.
Episode #33 — You, Me, and Gary
After their kiss, Melanie and Steve want to keep their new thing quiet, but Melanie’s nosy neighbor Gary (guest John Michael Higgins) isn’t one to keep secrets.
First aired: September 9, 2014
What do you think? Do you like the Sullivan & Son TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a fourth season?
Any reason for the cancellation? This isn’t fair because the is really great. Please bring it back, and take off some of the annoying reality shows.
I loved that show ! Adult comedy at its best and I would have liked to see where Steve and Melanie go from that first night together!
I loved this show, so sorry to see it go, was night comedy and am so sick of reality tv – please reconcider and put it back on !!!
AMEN
LOL. Thank goodness for common sense. The show has finally been put out of its misery. Best part about it being cancelled? It only aired 33 episodes, so there will be no syndication!
Hello MR, Rob Long: Wonderful to see your show , Sullivan and son, Met you In Las Vegas, 6 or 8 years, ago. YOU and your wife had just drove from back east some place!!. I had seen you a more serious, program and enjoyed the show. You said I was the ONLY person to ever reconize you since leaving the east coast .. Good work in the new show, enjoy it very much, the lady playing your mother is priceless, and YOU sister really like her. She is so cute. and your father is great also. Well all and all… Read more »
Love this show cutting edge of late night comedy. The whole cast gels and touches our reality.
Silliest, moronic, unbelievable comedy(?) Glad the actors have work, everyone gets desperate.
You should keep Sullivan and Son. This show is hilarious. If you must cancel something, try idiotic shows like the Kardashians, Little People, etc. I mean really, who cares about watching a show about these people let alone a couple raising 12 or more kids. Quit insulting our intelligence. When I get home from work, I look forward to get my mind off my day & Sullivan and Son does just that. The other shows I mentioned just enforce the fact that this country has gone to the sewer. What’s next? You planning a show about “Octomom”? Her Dr., parents,… Read more »
I agree! I really like Sullivan & Son It is SO MUCH BETTER than most of the stupid “reality” shows. I can’t believe anyone would watch the Kardashians or the show about the serial breeders…YIKES! Sullivan & Son is very funny! It is sort of like Cheers but allot more to it. Really looking forward to the next season
I think this program is hysterical. It can make me laugh out loud. For me, that is not an easy accomplishment. Hank can be a little offensive, at times, but I am in control of myself and what I watch on TV. I can always change the channel. The season is too short and I can’t wait until the new one finally begins. Make the season longer, you guys!
I love the show as do all of my friends at Foxwoods resort Casino!
This is one of the funniest shows on tv anymore. I’m so bored with the reality shows and all the singing/dancing competitions. It’s refreshing to see a sitcom that you can spend 30 minutes laughing at!!! Love it I hope it isn’t cancelled.
[…] no surprise, TBS has renewed Sullivan & Son for a second season of 10 episodes. It’s frequently one of the highest-rated original series […]
This show is unpleasant, unbelievable, offensive, cliche, and there is absolutely nothing entertaining or appealing about this plot nor any of the characters.
I’m curious to know how this show is so offensive?? Just because there are Koreans acting silly?! I am biracial. My mother is Korean and my father is Caucasian. I find the show hilarious and I can also relate to it as well. So many times I have watched it and thought,”that is my mom.” I personally cannot wait for the next season.
My daughter and I just love this show. Part of the reason is because Hank is NOT PC.
I’m really weary of all the PC crap.
You probably have an old TV with k nobs. There are two k nobs on it. One changes the channel and one turns it off.
We discovered the first show and were pleasantly surprised….fun format and good characters. Please don’t revert to the usual comedy pattern of “vaginas”, “panties”, “penises” etc that Mike and Molly and others seem to feel necessary for a hit. The Middle and Modern Family are successes without this dialogue
….We are not prudes, but we find this so unattractive in a comedy series.
Show #3 is on the line here……we’ll continue watching if you keep the series as it was in the pilot! Thanks….Doug and Judy Campbell, Union, KY
I agree. The program is entertaining and light. It should be a huge success if they don’t turn the corner and make it raunchy.
