Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
i really love this show i hope to see more
We loved this series and are blown away CMT is cancelling it where it left off. There is so much left to be shared in this real life drama that this series could honestly go on for many more seasons. Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, BBKing, and Roy Orbison haven’t even met Sam Phillips yet let alone 3 of the 5 mega stars haven’t even been casted! There’s so much to work with here and CMT has a great base to work from between the cast and writing. Such a waste to only do 8 episodes!
**** that this show was awesome they need to bring it back this is history I need my sun records
BRING IT BACK PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. My husband & I loved it. Waited every week just to see who they would feature next. It made us go back to our days of when music was music & all words could be understood as they were being sung. It was EXECELENT!!!!!
Dianne & Tom
I am so sick of these demographics. I am 50 and it seems every show l love gets cancelled. WTF why can’t they see that old people watch TV too.
I love this show! It’s different and original. I wish there was a season two. Very disappointed
Renew it great show with great potential
This is upsetting. You need to get this uncanceled. Me and my family loved the show and were dieing see what happened next. SOOOOOO DISAPOINTED IN CMT
Excellent show really entertaining.
Upset with this decision. I’ve never been an avid tv watcher, but I’ve always been a fan of music history. This show was not only entertaining, but gave everyone a taste of some pretty great events that shaped music today.
Extremely disappointed that Sun Records is not going to be renewed. Our family really enjoyed this fantastic show. There’s not that many good shows out there anymore that’s not another reality show. Another good one gone.
Shame that Sun Records is not going to season 2. I thoroughly enjoyed it and blame the network for not having advertised it more. I love Nashville, too, but believe its strong following is the result that is aired on a major network for its first 4 seasons. Sun Records was brilliantly done with some very great actors portraying the characters. I would love to see a major pick it up. BTW, Million Dollar Quartet from which I believe the show originated, was equally brilliant!
This was the best series on TV. Everything about it was excellent. The script, direction, actors, production quality. Of course it’s going to be cancelled. It’s too good for television. I’m very sad and very disappointed. That show was brilliant!
Enjoyed the show and looked forward to each episode even setting the DVR if we weren’t going to be home. The early days Rock and Roll and of the featured musicians is worth visiting and I urge you to continue the series.
This series was fantastic! There is nothing on TV like it. Maybe another network will pick it up!
