Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Loved the show. Loved the actors. Sucks it’s not coming back. I feel cheated
I enjoyed season one of Sun Records. I thought it was an interesting take on the birth of rock-n-roll music in the U.S. I sure hope it gets picked up for a second season. I want to see more of Carl Perkins’ story.
Shocked and disappointed that this was cancelled. My hubby and I looked forward to watching this together each week. Such a good show. 🙁
I wanted a season two, enjoyed the show
So disappointed to hear this show was not picked up for a second season. The cast was excellent and the episodes were great. I could think of other shows that should have been pulled . Glad I recorded what I did.
Great Series, I made sure I work on Thursday nights. I hate to hear it got cancelled. I hope CMT rethinks this move. This is the only reason I was watching CMT. SMH
Loved it. Would watch a second season. Very disappointed that it won’t be renewed.
This was a great show. Very disappointed.
A mistake to cancel this show. Don’t cancel the good ones!
sun records was a very good , real show. i can’t believe it was cancelled. i was looking forward to possibly buying it on dvd. if this is what cmt thinks of there viewers, i don’t need to watch other shows on there channel including nashville
I agree. im “over” Nashville. especially now that they keep renewing it, but couldn’t see their way to renew Sun Records. pure political agenda garbage on Nashville. so done. lost my sense of humor on this.
I’m sorry to hear that Sun Records was canceled.

Its my opinion that the writers on Nashville (both on ABC and on CMT) have had an obvious political agenda. Sun Records did not.
Very disappointed! It was just starting to get good.
Should have been renewed. It was based on REAL musicians and not FICTIONAL. The actors was honoring some of the VERY best of the music industry. In case anyone doesn’t remember ELVIS the KING of ROCK in ROLL. Some music shows now are more like night time Soap Operas. Just my opinion no disrespect to other actors
Very disappointed! Though it started out slowly, we eventually got drawn in and were very much looking forward to Season 2! Is there no hope?
