Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Love this show
Sun Records was a great show. Sad to read that was not renewed.

Very good show . Was looking to watch season 2
Loved the series, they should keep it on tv.
Absolutely loved this series and totally bummed to see there isn’t going to be a second.
So sad to read that Sun Records is no longer going to shine anymore. It was so great to watch the evolution of rock and roll and hear such timeless songs. The actors were all fantastic. I am going to cry, cry, cry and this show is always on my mind. Can’t believe it’s over and gone, gone, gone. CMT please don’t have a wooden heart and continue to tell the full story of this era
This is one of the better programs on TV. It is absurd that this was cancelled, and so many worthless shows remain.
I did say PLEASE! Nothing better on CMT.
Seriously! ? This is a great show! ! ! And original. Excited to watch. This was history of music.. Live in Nashville, never watched one episode of the show, Sun Records all the way! Please do not cancel!
I was extremely disappointed that the show was cancelled. It was the best thing to come along in the last twenty years. I always wondered how Rock N Roll came about. This was telling the story in a very entertaining way. All my senior friends were enjoying the show as much as I was enjoying it. Even one of my granddaughters enjoyed the show.
