Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
That’s disappointing!! I was looking forward to each episode and it was getting better and better as Elvis was now on track and Jerry Lee and Jonny were coming up… I hope CMT revise their plans and continue with the show. It was finally something original and different from what’s out there already… Please keep the show…
Very disappointed. This show was very well done. True to the real story. Character development moved it a little slow but the careful attention to detail made it so much more real and gave it substance. Hollywood can be so spineless. So many great shows were almost cancelled, i.e. Seinfeld. I wish the producers, developers, and advertisers of these projects had the depth of commitment to weather the grind of the startup. The eight show series ended on the brink of getting into so many of the great stories represented by these larger than life characters. Meanwhile crap like Jerry… Read more »
I loved the show and was looking foreword for it to come back. Am really disappointed. Maybe there was to many sex scenes in it. It was for me. Would like to see more of the stars and how they got into their careers.

Very disappointed this show is not currently being renewed. Really enjoyed it and found it quite fascinating. Hoping CMT changes their plans on this one.
I loved it… very disappointed that it’s canceled
Really enjoyed this show
We loved the show and are extremely disappointed to hear of its cancellation. Not what viewers can do to get it renewed; except stop watching CMT period.
I loved it and several others who did please bring it back
I thought it was a great series. Loved watching it. Brought back memories. Why did they cancel?
