Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?

I was born in 1968 and I love this show I really enjoyed this I grew up in a wonderful time were there was not much technology and music was an important part of my life. My parents and there love for the music of there generation made me enjoy this show and reunited me to what I love about then and there music of there time. I am very saddened and disappointed that a show like this cannot stay afloat, as it touched the hearts of those who loved this era in time. Its makes me sad to come… Read more »

Please please please bring the show back I enjoyed it immensely.
Such a good show on so many levels and they cancel it???? Bring it back on Netflix or Hulu so we can further enjoy it
It was a really good show and one of the few that still targeted baby boomers. Maybe a real network will see the promise, pick it up a do a little thing I like to call marketing. I’ve discussed with my friends and none had even heard of it. So sad.
OH NO!!!! SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!! My husband and I both really enjoyed Sun Records!!! We were left wanting MORE of the stories on these characters. We didn’t care if it was true or not. We knew it was just based on actual events. The characters were interesting to follow. Being only one season long left us with so many unanswered questions. Will Sam stay with his wife? What will happen to Elvis now he has left Mr Phillips? YES, We know the real story. However, We’d like to know the SUN RECORDS story!!! Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis… Read more »
