Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Please bring it back loved the show watched every week and love finale might hoping for season 2 u did u leave a cliff hanger just to cancel it that not right bring it back
Should be renewed. I loved this show and don’t understand why it is not being renewed. Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee, and all the others are part of a great time in my life. This show brought back great memories.
I loved the new series. Sun Records…was so anxious to see the new episodes. Maybe the ratings and viewers were low because lots of people do not subscribe to CMT or most didn’t know it was on that channel. I am very sad to hear it was cancelled. Loved all the characters and creation on the story!! I would love to see it returned as would your other fans!!
Really enjoyed this series. Very disappointed in CMT for not renewing! Was looking forward to continuing the story. Hope they reconsider this poor decision.
Should be renewed! I do not understand why the good shows are not picked up this is very disapointing. The acting sets story direction was so fantastic for TV and the music extraordinary. Please rethink this asap!
We are definitely very disappointed that Sun Records was cancelled! We were really looking forward to the second season! As it is, you just left us hanging there, as to the discovery of these incredible talents of the 1950’s! Don’t we as senior citizens, account for your ratings?
I loved the show and my family did two seems they don’t listen to the people anymore very sad
Very sad, was a great show! PLEASE RECONSIDER
Great show! Such an interesting time and so much more left to tell. Great acting. Please bring it back!
Great show! Love It! Keep it going please! Big fans!
My brother and I loved the series. Great music, story telling and acting.
I was born in the late 50’s but have 50’s on 5 on my XM radio. Early rock is so refreshing!
Hope you change your mind..bring it back for season 2.
My wife and I loved the show and couldn’t wait each week until it aired on CMT. We both grew up during this period of rock and roll and related to the whole story of Elvis, Jerry Lee, and the Colonel. Many memories were stirred up with this series that we both enjoyed very much. Hope the exec’s will reconsider!
I loved that show . I can’t believe you cancelled it. Please bring it back . Great show !
I thought it was one of the best shows on tv. Great concept since pretty much everyone over 35 is familiar with the content. It was definitely poorly promoted. If a network station had this show it would be a big hit
I loved it..
