Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Please bring back Sun Records. It was an awesome show. Even my husband was in to it and he wasn’t a follower of this music. It is a great piece of history. Please bring it back.
We love Sun Records it was a great show please bring it back
18-49 demographics??? What about the 49 to 80 demographics, the ones who actually know what the series was about! We lived through it, want to see/hear the real story. Sad that this is not coming back, without finishing the story it started.
Please bring this show back! It was so good and interesting. Please!
I absolutely Love this show. CMT please bring it back. This is history that needs to be shown and the actors replicates it so perfectly. If CMT really cares about it’s viewers, preserve this historical show. Shouldn’t everyone know about this historic music Era?
I loved this show so much I just took my vacation and went to Memphis. I toured Sun Records and was so glad to put this experience with the show I had been watching. Please Please Bring It Back.
Please renew. I’m too young to have lived in that age, but I love love love the era and music. Renew, renew renew!
Oh yeah. I work early. I can’t stay up to watch it. I have Charter Spectrum Cable which is nit on CMT’s list of providers so I can’t stream and the on demand on my cable takes weeks to update and never showed the last episode or two. If you renew please fix that.
Please, please. please renew Sun Records. Its really good. After each episode I can’t wait for the next one. Very few decent shows on anymore.
Bring it back!!! We looked forward to watching this every week!!!! Loved it!!
I need to see Jerry Lee get discovered. This show was so good. I was excited every week. Please make more episodes.
