Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Please, please bring it back. My husband and I loved this show.
Bring it back! My husband and I loved it!
Please renew Sun records love the show
I very much enjoyed this show. I am so sad to hear that it has been canceled. Sun Records had real music, unlike the new ?country?.
I have no other reason at this time to watch CMT other than Sun Records. Please consider a season 2. There is so much more story to be told.
This show has so much going for it. I can’t believe that CMT could make such a bad decision. The next 8 episodes would have all of the artists coming to Sun Records, and the Million Dollar Quartet session. They are also missing the opportunity to release companion music and albums, like “Nashville” does. Why cancel now? Not smart.
I really love Sun Records. Such a disappointment taking this show off. Please reconsider having a second season.
My family loved watching Sun Records. I am saddened to hear it will not be renewed. Renew this show.
I wanted to say I loved the show and was looking forward to season 2. I’m so dissapointed
The first time in YEARS there has been REAL music on CMT… and it gets cut off.
My husband and I LOVED this show!!
So very disappointed this show has not been renewed, it was quite honestly one of the best shows I’ve seen….. Hoping you may consider renewing in the future
So bummed Sun Records won’t be back for Season 2! I LOVED this show!! Please rethink and bring it back!!
I am a HUGE Memphis fan!! Love Elvis and the history of sun records. Chad michal Murray was the best choice cause he had the greatest voice!! Please bring back this fantastic show! The world needs to know what Memphis Tn. Has done for music!!
It’s very rare that I find a show that I absolutely have to watch every week. Sun Records was definitely one of those shows and I am extremely upset that there isn’t going to be a season 2. Please, please reconsider this terrible decision.
I love love this show!!Please please don’t cancel. I am a big Elvis fan. The show is so nostalgic. I want to see so much more of these die hard 50’s singers and their lives. I will be truly crushed if this sow doesn’t come back
Since CMT stopped airing music videos so much years ago I hadn’t watched it until Sun Records aired and I got hooked. I’m 40 yo and although I didn’t grow up in that era I’ve always found it interesting and when CMT put out Sun Records I was hooked!! I would love for CMT to reconsider putting out a second season and see how it goes, I know they would have me as a faithful watcher. It shows the artist at young ages and reminds us that they where at one time just as common as we are, that’s humbling… Read more »
