Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Sun records absolutely shou NOT BE CANCELLED. It is truly a CMT show while there are other shows (still king). That is one they can cancel
Just found out that Sun Records was cancelled…. totally disappointed!!! I can not stand it when networks decide to cancel a new show before giving it a few chance AND leaving the viewers hanging without finishing the story….so much more to be covered as well. I would have thought CMT would have been better than the others!
I really liked the show. Never missed an episode and was looking forward to season 2.
Very disappointed to hear that there will not be a season 2! I want to see Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee!! You can’t leave us hanging like that!!
I have gotten up to 2000 people in Alabama and Tennessee to agree to not watch CMT if they can’t put sun records back on. First of all they left us hanging on the stories. Second, they never made it to the million dollar quartet! And how could there be a “COUNTRY MUSIC CHANEL” (CMT) without backing up the history of it! I got news for CMT! You and your zillion dollar company would not even EXIST had it not been for Cash, Lewis, and ESPECIALLY ELVIS! (OMG…don’t even get me started on that!!!) CMT would not exist without them!!!!
I’m disgusted that CMT being a music channel will not back this up and air the show again. I plan to cut my CMT out and just not watch it. That is VERY disappointing!
CMT should renew it!!! JOHNNY CASH HASN’T EVEN Started to sing!
Very disappointed.
LOVED Sun Records. Just looked to see when it would start back with Season 2 and am really disappointed!! Just got CMT added to my Comcast for this and Nashville shows. Bad decision!!!! Bring it back. It needs a conclusion.
One of my favorites. Bring it Back
My wife and I were watching Sun Records every week. Also, the only one we watched on CMT. Then****it disappeared. We were like, what the hell happened to it? We loved it. I just found out on this site it was cancelled. Figures. The country radio stations do the same thing. Even the classic channels won’t play greats like Suzy Bogguss.
I thought it was a good show showing the growth of the company and the singers and is very well liked in Country music. Please bring it back. The show was just getting started
Please bring back Sun Records for a second Season! Loved it and was so looking forward to the continuing story.
We was looking forward to the next season, I am sorry to hear this. Just figures finally a good show, now canceled.
absolutely a must season two
