Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I loved the show and watched it with my mom who loved t also. Please renew!!! You definitely need to advertise more. I didn’t know you had tv series and movies until I followed nashville to your channel.
PLEASE RENEW, I LOVED THIS SHOW AND HAVE TOLD ALOT OF PEOPLE TO WATCH IT. ADVERTISE IT MORE
Yes please renew. I loved this show and have told a lot of people to watch it.
My family loved the show we’re in our early 30s in age we live in Nashville Tn but it was a great show it should be renewed for season 2,3 and maybe even 4 it shouldn’t be left off with just one season please renew it please it was a great show
This was the only show that interested me on CMT and you should have at least concluded it if even in summary. Cancelling it in this way puts a bad taste for CMT for a lot of people. Your demographic for this show was much older. More like 40 to 80. You lost many viewers on this one that you don’t even count (Over 50) Thumbs down CMT!
We Loved Sun Records! Looked forward to each new episode that came out and extremely disappointed it will not return for a season 2. the cast is great.
I loved it
Getting really tired of investing in a show only to have it cancelled. At least continue as a movie and finish the story
Yes, this Season 2 deserves to continue to tell the story. This show was so great with setting back in the 50s with the start of rock n roll- so realistic and actors did a great job portraying these famous artists. My son who is 16 looked forward to this show and hearing about these lives of people that shaped so much of our music history. Please bring it back!!
We absolutely loved Sun Records and are extremely disappointed that it has been discontinued. Everyone we know who grew up in the 50’s remembers. It’s so much fun watching and reliving the story. Please bring it back!
I loved this show! So sad it isn’t coming back. It and Nashville favorites.
your problem is your demographic group is 18-49…that age group doesnt even know what a vinyl record is nor do they know any of the artists outside of maybe elvis…if your demographic group was above the age of 50 you would find you had quite a relevant following…those people remember those days or maybe those days were a few years b4 them but they know the stories and can relate to the show…please bring it back for one more season and test among the appropriate age group..thanks
I could say I agree but the age group should stay low, you would be surprised at how many younger kids are listening to vinyl records and know more older artist than newer. But the age group is basically at fifty so I see no reason to move it up. And the season two will not come because if you watch the series you would know that Sam Phillips sold this record company at the very end of the series. The artist that were in the TV shows Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis were the main artist… Read more »
