Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
OH NO!!!! This became my FAVORITE program!!!! Watched it a second time, ‘on demand’!!!!! GREAT acting and story line!!!! PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!!
Bting sun records back!
Very dissapointed to hear this show is not coming back. We really wnjoyed it and was lookingvforward to more episodes and seasons. Please reconsider.
I can’t believe they canceled it. We were anxiously awaiting the new season to start. Very disappointed in CMT and will not be watching anymore of their shows.
I would really enjoy seeing a second season of sun records granted I had to tape and watch the next day as I go into my business early each day so I watch most shows on DVR
This vintage rockabilly chick is very disappointed. I just binge watched the first season and I can’t believe there will be no more. This is an important story to tell…the story lines are fantastic, the actors are amazing. It’s a pivotal time in the history of rock n roll meets hillbilly meets the blues. There has to be another network that is willing to pick it up!! I need more of this in my life!!
Leave it to CMT to cancel a great show. They have no idea how great shows start out. Just look back at shows from the past that started out in the first season with lower than expected ratings that really blew up big by season 2 & 3. Sun records had the right vibe to start with, just needed someone at CMT to roll with it for season 2 and it would have been really big, bridging the gap from the early days of rock & roll to country! Now we are going to be stuck with crappy shows like… Read more »
How can this be limited? The story starts with the major people as young, starting out artists. I love seeing how they all started out. The finale left with a story to continue to tell as they all progressed. Why would it be a limited run series? This was a very fun and different show with awesome music and they did a great job with the casting. They all really looked so much like the guys we know and love. What the heck?
Too bad. We really enjoyed SUN RECORDS. The cast was awesome and the music great. Younger people need to know where and how our music developed and how the industry was first shaped.
Very sad to hear there will be no Season 2. Loved the show, great acting, great story. Bring it back pleeaassseee!
Very disappointed there will be no Season 2. Loved the show, great acting, great story. Bring it back, pleaassee!
unbelievable another good show cancelled who decides this whoever it is should be sacked
loved the show, very bummed that it’s canceled. how can they take that off, and give us crap like ”still the king”, are you kidding me?
We loved watching Sun Records and really miss it.
I’m very disappointed there will not be a Season 2. I truly enjoyed this program. It is well-cast and is a great documentary on the history of rock and roll. Eight episodes is not giving it a chance. I hope you reconsider.
