Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
BUMMMER CMT, Finally something worth watching and you pull the plug
Good luck with Nashville because now I have no reason to watch CMT !
I loved this show! I guess the powers that be would rather peddle smut than good wholesome TV like Sun Records! I mean yes there was a bit of language and an occasional sex scene but that is to be expected today! we never even got to see a wrap up for the show!
Terrific re the music and the characters. Hope it gets new life somewhere.
Loved Sun Records. DVRd all episodes and binge watched. So sorry to hear it was cancelled.
I’m pissed my wife and I loved this show
My husband and I enjoyed this series and want it back. Please reconsider your decision to cancel.
I just heard about this show. Must have been a Jimmy Kimmel rerun because I thought it was a new series. Where are reruns of the first season available? All things Memphis are worth televising! The city is full of so much history, musical and otherwise.
The wife one I were eagerly anticipating the launch of this show that we DVR’ed every episode.. Back to waiting for the next season and it’s not gonna continue….”Bummer”
Unfortunate that this series did not appeal to viewers with a limited amount of brain cells. The show did not receive the promotion it deserved. A significant segment of TV viewers were unaware of the series; a disservice to all involved in the production of a terrific show.
I really enjoyed the show and I’m super bummed it’s not being renewed
That show was awesome and could’ve been spun off unto 2 or 3 30 episode series. No wonder I ever watch CMT
This was an excellent show, so bummed to learn there will be no episodes 🙁
I loved this show and watched it every week. Sad when it ended and wanted to see more. So was waiting for season 2. What is wrong with the network people. this was a great show especially for the baby boomers. You can’t put crap up to draw the kids us baby boomers are the ones at home watching every week.
This was a GREAT show. My husband and I loved it. Please bring back!!!
I’m SO BUMMED! It was a great story & I couldn’t wait for the next episode! PLEASE BRING IT BACK!
