Television can be a bittersweet business, full of cancellations and renewals. This time around, Sweetbitter has ended up getting the short end of the stick. Starz has cancelled the low-rated dramedy series after two seasons.
Sweetbitter stars Ella Purnell, Tom Sturridge, Caitlin FitzGerald, Paul Sparks, Evan Jonigkeit, Eden Epstein, Jasmine Mathews, and Daniyar. Based on the novel from series creator Stephanie Danler, the drama centers on Tess (Purnell), a 22-year-old woman who moves to New York City in search of a new life and winds up training at one of the city’s top restaurants. In the second season, as Tess comes into her own, she realizes she has to learn how to play the game, in order to survive.
The first season of Sweetbitter averaged just a 0.06 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 164,000 viewers. The second season averaged a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 93,000 viewers. Compared to the first season, that’s down by 54% and 44%, respectively.
While the ratings were quite low, the cancellation is still a bit of a surprise since it was produced by Starz’s corporate parent, Lionsgate. The 14th and final episode of Sweetbitter aired on August 18th.
What do you think? Did you watch the Sweetbitter TV show? Are you sorry that there won’t be a third season?
I loved this show! Very disappointing. I doubt that I will keep Starz.
Exactly! Literally the only reason I had Starz. I’m beyond pissed.
I loved this show, especially Jake and Tess…I only came across this searching for something to watch, needed more promotions. I’m so disappointed that it won’t go on
Very disappointed! The show was very intriguing and in my opinion was at its best with the ending of season 2. Promotion should have definitely been better giving this series the attention it truly deserved and the ratings it deserved. Such a disappointment!!
I really liked this show and am sad that it has been cancelled. In my opinion, it didn’t receive enough promotion, because quite honestly, I don’t think Starz knew how to promote it or to whom it would appeal. I stumbled on the show accidentally, but then binged it because it was so compelling. It really was good television, with well developed and plausible story lines, well developed characters, and character arcs. The writing was perfect, also. I feel like crying a little.
It took them about nine months for season two to air and we were promised ten episodes and only got eight. Also, as was mentioned they rushed out the season when the first two episodes aired in week one and the last two episodes aired in week six! The entire season was over in a month and a half. Very disappointed! Starz was never really behind this wonderful show and did a terrible job promoting it!!
I enjoyed “Sweet Bitter”. I was left hanging. Wondering what plans Tess had for the restaurant. Besides getting rid of Simone. Would that actually happen ? It just abruptly ended. I was disappointed.
I loved that show and am totally bummed that it won’t return.
I liked this show a lot. The characters were well-developed & the acting was very good, too.
I really enjoyed the show—so disappointed! Acting was great & the characters were well developed.
Stay tuned fans: Stephanie has a new book coming out in the Spring and is writing a new show!
That’s great news but it’s not bringing sweet bitter back on screen
There was zero marketing for this show. I had not even heard of it before until one day I was on my Crave app and I saw it. None of my friends had heard of it either. If Starz had taken more time to advertise this show more, it probably would have had more viewership because it was an excellent show with great character and relationship development. The characters actually changed and evolved and grew and it was great. It was so different from many other shows right now. I’m absolutely devastated it will not be renewed. But I am… Read more »
So sorry to hear its cancelled. Really enjoyed the second season, and was looking forward to developments in season 3. Different from other series… enjoyed the relational journeys.
Very disappointed. I will miss that show.
Sorry to see Sweetbitter cancelled. I was definitely a fan and looked forward to each week’s show. 🙁
Disappointed. Loved the last episode season 2. Characters had more character than in the first season. It was just getting good…
