The peacock network has decided to cut their season order of The Cape from 13 to 10 episodes. Production of the TV series will shut down this week, the latest sign that the show will be cancelled.
The Cape follows Vince Faraday (David Lyons), an honest cop who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family (Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott) and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken their home city, Vince becomes “The Cape” — a vigilante and his son’s favorite comic book superhero. Others in the cast include James Frain, Keith David, Summer Glau, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, and Vinnie Jones.
The series has been a disappointment for NBC in the ratings and Monday’s numbers were the worst so far. The TV series debuted on January 9th with a special two-hour event that attracted a decent 2.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.45 million total viewers. Eight days later, episode three of The Cape dropped a huge 30% in the demo, to a 1.8 rating and 6.22 million. Episode four’s ratings fell another 11% to a 1.6 demo rating and 5.84 million viewers. Monday’s hit a new low with a 1.5 and 5.343 million.

The show currently averages a 1.9 in the demo and 6.46 million viewers. After just five episodes, it’s become one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the network, tying with Chuck.
For months, NBC has had The Event slated to return to the Mondays at 9pm timeslot on February 28th. When that happens, only eight episodes of The Cape will have aired. Word is that the network is considering delaying The Event for another week to finish off The Cape’s season. If that doesn’t happen, it seems unlikely that NBC will find a place to air the leftover pair of episodes.
It’s even more unlikely that The Cape will be renewed for a second season or end with any kind of resolution.
What do you think? Is The Cape doomed to be cancelled? What could have been done differently? Is it better than The Event?
UPDATE: NBC has delayed the return of The Event by one week. Episodes nine and 10 of The Cape are expected to air on February 28th, finishing the season.

Love the show to pieces….if they cancel I will be sooooo disappointed:(
Think the story line is great. Can’t wait each week to see if Vince will finally make himself known to his wife and son again. I think the episodes are greatly thought out.
My vote is to continue……
this makes me very mad just when you get into a show they take it off. I want to know what happens at least they could of ended it like a movie, not leaving you going what happens. this is bullsh**
it DIDN’T grow on me! I saw the pilot and was mildly interested and the follow-up didn’t impress me at all. There was nothing to sink your teeth into. Bottom line, people just didn’t care about the story or characters because the show didn’t give us enough to care about.
It took a while for the characters to ‘build’, but wish it was staying on cause its an enjoyable family show… its has grown on me.
I LOVE this show.. but i agree it needs to be on a more geek friendly night.. once people watch it they will get hooked.. it is just getting people to watch.. lots of unfinished story lines.. would love to see this through to the end..
I liked the show. Maybe it should have stayed on Sunday nights.
I’m watching the cape in afghanistan because of no tv I have my wife tape them and send them to me and of the six episodes I LOVE IT character development took too long for microwave society but great acting by david keith and the Scales character is AWESOME need more from them and more ACTION!!!!!!This show gets me out of afghanistan for 48minutes.Please do not CANCEL!!!!!!!!
A show that had a slow start, and continues to have writing problems. But under it all, good characters with a lot of potential that, as of episode 4, really started getting meaty. This is a show, however, that will appeal to fans of comic books. It is obvious from the writing, the shots, and the scenarios that this is made by people who -get- comic books and who understand that some things which would be, in other genres, flaws, are important for giving comics their feel. This is a creative story that fits well into comic convention with really… Read more »
I really enjoy this show and am tired of NBC cancelling shows just as I get into them. I don’t watch reality shows or Law & Order and was enjoying something different than the regular drivel. I like the sci-fi/fantasy element and the characters. Please let this develope into something great!
Truly, The Cape is way better than The Event; why? Simple: The Cape has a beginning, a middle, and an end, wheras The Event has what? So far, with regard to The Event, we have had, what, a start, questions asked and some answered, and more questions without answers. Truly, The Cape is better than The Event; this is true in spite of my enjoying The Event and wondering what will happen next. If The Cape does not return, I will still have enjoyed this program and I will leave it behind knowing that one day father and son would… Read more »
Make a mafia show morons. Are rich people really this stupid?lol
It’s a good show – too bad NBC doesn’t have the patience to develop shows that don’t have significant, immediate success. The sci-fi category is underserved, and Monday night might not have been the best choice. But the writing was good, and the characters were being developed. It may not have been a good choice to have him constantly pining for his wife and son – as a single person, his story line could have been developed much more broadly.
My wife and I love the show, in fact it’s the only Sci-Fi program she ever got into. PLEASE don’t cancel, move it to a more geek driven sci-fi night like Friday or Saturday . The show does have potential. Summer Glau is a great actress and deserves a break.
I think it is pretty good. Definintely requires imagination but we need more use of the imagination. I am sorry to hear they may cancel it. I have been recording it for my grandsons – they are 8 and they absolutely love it. My concern is after last nights episode it has become more than a little creepy for 8 year olds. I was hoping to write and see if anyone knew where it was heading. Sadly it sounds like it is heading for the basement. I think it could be better appreciated by a younger crowd. Maybe move it… Read more »
Good show. Need some imagination to be able to enjoy it, but most of your loyal viewers are probably lacking that by now. Its mostly because when you begin to watch a show, you want to see how it ends. However, NBC like most other stations are cancelling shows left and right and no one wants to get into a series anymore. Why don’t you just save yourself the trouble NBC (Now Broadcasting Crap), and replace it with a “reality” show.
Not a bad show, but kind of lame and one if I miss I’m not upset, didn’t think it would last, they took heroes off and it was far better! Just hope the keep No Ordinary Family on, love that show!
couldn’t agree more although i honestly prefer the effects and powers on heroes better, like the fire starter sucked and Ethan Suplee, though i like his work didn’t really suit the power, also the power was stupid.
