The peacock network has decided to cut their season order of The Cape from 13 to 10 episodes. Production of the TV series will shut down this week, the latest sign that the show will be cancelled.
The Cape follows Vince Faraday (David Lyons), an honest cop who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family (Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott) and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken their home city, Vince becomes “The Cape” — a vigilante and his son’s favorite comic book superhero. Others in the cast include James Frain, Keith David, Summer Glau, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, and Vinnie Jones.
The series has been a disappointment for NBC in the ratings and Monday’s numbers were the worst so far. The TV series debuted on January 9th with a special two-hour event that attracted a decent 2.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.45 million total viewers. Eight days later, episode three of The Cape dropped a huge 30% in the demo, to a 1.8 rating and 6.22 million. Episode four’s ratings fell another 11% to a 1.6 demo rating and 5.84 million viewers. Monday’s hit a new low with a 1.5 and 5.343 million.

The show currently averages a 1.9 in the demo and 6.46 million viewers. After just five episodes, it’s become one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the network, tying with Chuck.
For months, NBC has had The Event slated to return to the Mondays at 9pm timeslot on February 28th. When that happens, only eight episodes of The Cape will have aired. Word is that the network is considering delaying The Event for another week to finish off The Cape’s season. If that doesn’t happen, it seems unlikely that NBC will find a place to air the leftover pair of episodes.
It’s even more unlikely that The Cape will be renewed for a second season or end with any kind of resolution.
What do you think? Is The Cape doomed to be cancelled? What could have been done differently? Is it better than The Event?
UPDATE: NBC has delayed the return of The Event by one week. Episodes nine and 10 of The Cape are expected to air on February 28th, finishing the season.

I had high hopes for The Cape and looked forward to it’s debut. The pilot was pretty good, but it went downhill from there. For me, what’s the point of having a superhero if no one knows he exists. Only the bad guys knew about him and that made the show dull to me. The other problem for me was not allowing his wife and son know he was still alive at some point. I can see not doing it at the very beginning, but when it didn’t happen episode after episode, I lost interest. Even if the son didn’t… Read more »
As many have already said. Not perfect but shows need time to develop.
The Cape was just getting there. We all looked forward to it being on in our family.
Just like the old days.
First Fox cancelled Dark Angel. Then WB cancelled Birds of Prey. Then NBC cancelled Heros, the Bionic Woman, & now The Cape.
There’s still Smallville on WB but that show’s gotten so old. The dude has been Clark forever. ., it’s like FLY ALREADY!!!
The Cape was just starting to get REALLY interesting. Oh well.
I was really pushing for this show. I am certainly a fan of the masked crusader genre. However the show was doomed from the start. I had high expectations but the plot was incredibly simple; you could have chosen any back story but decided to go with a cop who is framed, fakes his death and dons a mask and cape as homage to his sons favortie comic hero…Really I mean we could have gone with literally anything else…literally. The castin wasn’t bad but I knew we were in trouble when I saw Summer Glau’s name. I love her, but… Read more »
Please Don’t cancel the show, I enjoy it, I have to go on the website and watch the TV Episodes because I have classes for College, so I can’t be home to tune in for the new episodes. I’m sure more people watch it but they just go on the website and watch it so they don’t have to see all the commercials. I love the story line behind the cape, I love the Characters and how every episode is different, I want to see what happens with vince and his family. You can’t just drop this series dead and… Read more »
oh man!!it is a good show, probably not the best in the whole nerwork but they’re doing a good job..the guy is not a superhero, hes a hero with weaknesess, family, dreams, not like batman or superman,I wanted to see the end,i hope they can finnish the story,i love it
I hate when shows get cancelled without resolution. Renegade was a show like the Cape in that a cop was framed and had to go outside the law. I sure wish Reno Raines would have cleared his name before the show ended. The same goes for Vince Faraday. Our family has enjoyed watching the Cape on Monday nights. Maybe they can retool it a bit with the writers and put it on a different night?
I had a feeling that NBC was going to cancel “The Cape”. I mean for crying out loud, we are drenched with immoral junk all of the time. This a man that is trying to make the world a better place. We look at Smallville, but as soon as Season 10 is over; we won’t be looking at WGN-channel 13. The low moral shows that are appearing on television, we just as soon stop watching. I agree with most of the comments that have been written. It all goes back to who can make the most money, and throw family… Read more »
Hi, my family is so upset,we sat in front of the t.v. every time waiting for the cape to air. we even let my stepson stay up a lil longer to watch it.this is the 2nd time a show has been cancelled! its not fair to the viewers! we pay for the t.v. shows we should have a say and if they cancel it.Something should be done against the stations! Some kind of fine! Andy
I just emailed syfy.com to suggest them getting the show. I suggest everyone on here do the same. You guys know Syfy is known for picking up shows like this. Remember Sliders? That was a God awful show and they took that show beyond what the end should have been. Surely the cape would be a great show for them to take on.
What’s the point anymore? TV execs don’t care what a few thousand…….or even a few million……..listeners want. Not every show is a blockbuster that appeals to the mass majority. It seems to me that the trend is to pull a fairly decent show with promise after a few weeks if it does’t reach Number One status instantly. I am an avid TV watcher…. perhaps too much so……but I like Adventure / Mystery / Action shows and live Sports but don’t waste my time with sappy Comedies or Reality shows. Consequently, I WILL miss “The Cape” but I already miss SO… Read more »
I think The Cape should NOT be canceled. I agree with KB. I’ll be sad to see this show go… :'( There are way too many shows that they entice us with these days, only to burn us viewers by never finishing off the series… It makes people not want to invest their time in watching new shows because of the fear that it’ll be a waste of their time in the end anyways… It’s like what’s the point?

I think , The cape absolutely should be continued .
I’m saddened that The Cape is headed into the abyss. My entire family enjoyed watching the show. It is incredibly difficult to find family entertainment that doesn’t require strange questions from the teenagers, Viagra & or KY commercials, or sappy sick writing. While The Cape isn’t a perfect fix for family entertainment, it is entertaining. We enjoy our Monday nights. Actually, I’m watching it right now with my family while reading up to try to completely understand why NBC is choosing to cancel the show. I understand the numbers issue, but at the same time, I think with appropriate advertising… Read more »
It’s ok but Heroes was much better and the bad Sylar compared to Case u felt bad 2 like him because of how evil he was. This show is a little 2 campy 4 me but i wantex 2 see if they would make it darker like batman. Smallville was a success because it started out in HS, The Cape just seems too kiddy 4 a show that is suppose 2 bring in a huge 18-49 demographic. I won’t be suppose if it’s cancelled its just not thought provactive enough. As 4 The Event its much better becaues it keeps… Read more »
