The peacock network has decided to cut their season order of The Cape from 13 to 10 episodes. Production of the TV series will shut down this week, the latest sign that the show will be cancelled.
The Cape follows Vince Faraday (David Lyons), an honest cop who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family (Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott) and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken their home city, Vince becomes “The Cape” — a vigilante and his son’s favorite comic book superhero. Others in the cast include James Frain, Keith David, Summer Glau, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, and Vinnie Jones.
The series has been a disappointment for NBC in the ratings and Monday’s numbers were the worst so far. The TV series debuted on January 9th with a special two-hour event that attracted a decent 2.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.45 million total viewers. Eight days later, episode three of The Cape dropped a huge 30% in the demo, to a 1.8 rating and 6.22 million. Episode four’s ratings fell another 11% to a 1.6 demo rating and 5.84 million viewers. Monday’s hit a new low with a 1.5 and 5.343 million.

The show currently averages a 1.9 in the demo and 6.46 million viewers. After just five episodes, it’s become one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the network, tying with Chuck.
For months, NBC has had The Event slated to return to the Mondays at 9pm timeslot on February 28th. When that happens, only eight episodes of The Cape will have aired. Word is that the network is considering delaying The Event for another week to finish off The Cape’s season. If that doesn’t happen, it seems unlikely that NBC will find a place to air the leftover pair of episodes.
It’s even more unlikely that The Cape will be renewed for a second season or end with any kind of resolution.
What do you think? Is The Cape doomed to be cancelled? What could have been done differently? Is it better than The Event?
UPDATE: NBC has delayed the return of The Event by one week. Episodes nine and 10 of The Cape are expected to air on February 28th, finishing the season.

I really should know better…I should never start watching any new shows because they just get cancelled. We enjoyed The Cape and were looking forward to seeing what happens. Oh well, typical NBC!
Alright, I would just like to say: REALLY NBC??? The Event was absolutely horrible!!!! The Cape was much better show and I cannot see why The Cape would only be given 10 episodes.
I am very disappointed! What are you thinking cancelling the best show I have seen in a long time on NBC. Bring back “The Cape”. My family loves it! Finally a descent TV show to watch and you cancel it!!
For me this is one of the best written shows with a good moral base… maybe that’s the problem.
I hope that it doesn’t get canceled, this will be just another reason that I drop my cable, spend more time reading or on my computer. There is so little to watch already.
DO NOT cancel the cape PLEASE!!!! Just give it a chance. Sure it might seem a little cheesy, but seriously this is the type of show I and many others have been waiting for. Think about it! You left Chuck on the air and The Cape is so much better than that. Cape is unique, refreshing, a place to escape from all the pressures of life. It gives you a chance to be a kid again, even if just for an hour. I mean, just look at what else is on, Cop shows, Lawyer shows, Cop/Lawyer shows, and “Reality TV”.… Read more »
the event suckms
Long live the “Carnival of Crime” !!!
Sooo bummed- just found out it was cancelled. My favorite show and escape! So frustrating. And I am not a teenage kid- I’m a mom of two.
the cape is a really good show please do not cancel it
This was a good heartfelt tv show about a good cop who loves his son and wife; why cancel? Bring back the show please…..thank you!
I also LOVE “The Cape”, Why is it we finally get a entertaining show with a story to tell, instead of the really stupid reality shows, and the men go and cancel it. watched The Event tonight, husband and myself hated it. Cape so much better, storyline for sure better and the acting.
my 10 year old son and i watch the cape every monday, he even has to remind me time to time, its about the only show he looks forward to watching, i just told him the cape was going to be cancelled, and he was pretty bummed.
Yeah it needed some help I was sure looking for it!
Such a disappointment! Every time a decent family program comes on TV, it gets cancelled before it has a chance to get going. Perhaps NBC should look at what they are putting The Cape up against on other stations. I am SICK of reality TV. Please, NBC, give The Cape a second chance.
I totally agree with u, reality shows have no right 2 b aired in the 1st place. I really enjoy watching The Cape, reminds me a lot of Heroes. Another great show they canceled. NOT FAIR 2 FANS PEOPLE!!!!!!
WHY ARE THEY CANCELING THE CAPE. MANY SHOWS INITIALLY DO NOT HAVE A FOLLOWING UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN ON FOR A WHILE. THEY DID NOT EVEN GIVE IT A FAIR CHANCE.PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW.
TRY CHANGING UP THE LINE UP AGAINST THE OTHER NETWORK OFFERINGS.
WHEN THE WORKING CLASS GET HOME WE ALL NEED THIS TYPE OF ESCAPE FROM IT ALL.
MODAY NIGHTS ARE GOING TO SUCK ONCE AGAIN. THANKS PINHEADS!!!
